GE visa upgrade?

I logged into my AE account yesterday to check my balance and much to my suprise GE was offering to upgrade my plain jane AE store card to the Visa card.

This is my first upgrade offer. From my understanding, GE will close down the store card and re-open a new account under the Visa. And it will report as a new account, thus getting me a ding for new account and lowering my AAoA, is this correct? Is it even worth it? I have opened enough new accts this year and was planning on gardening well into nexr year. Your thoughts?

My situation was the exact opposite of yours as I had the ShopNBC Mastercard which GE discontinued. They said they contacted all cardholders by letter in July and I'm sure they did but I must not have opened the mail because the first I knew about it was when I logged into my account a few weeks ago and it showed the Mastercard and also a store card which I'd never had. I called and was informed that they replaced all Mastercards with a store card and mine should be arriving any day.

They did (and probably will in your case) report it as a new account, showing my old one closed. I would have closed it in July myself if I would have known because I really don't need any new accounts showing up, so if you don't want your AAofA to go down it would probably be safer to refuse the upgrade.
