I feel exactly the opposite... exactly how are they protecting me?

by allowing the cashier to have my home address is not protecting me from anything

if the card is stolen then i am not liable for any of the charges, the only thing showing my ID does is open me up to idenity theft

I write this on the back of all my cards over signing them because anyone that actually checks would have to view my picture while simultaneously viewing my signature beneath it on my drivers license... Also there is no signature for a thief to copy if attempting to make a fraudulent purchase with my lost/stolen card.

How many people write this on the back of there card?

Also if you do what is the frequency that people actually ask to see some photo I.D.?

Sadly in my experience it doesn't happen often.

Technically you're violating your credit card agreement unless you sign your card, then put SEE ID next to it.

Technically...stores can't ask for ID when you pay with Visa or MasterCard (It's against their policies). Banks may want the card signed as a "agreement" to the terms and conditions they set for their card but really just swiping it/using it acknowledges the acceptance of the terms. What is even more troubling is that some credit cards work without them even being officially "activated". As for me, I don't even sign the back of my cards...I have horrible handwriting so it wouldn't be of any benefit. I simply monitor my account activity to make sure nothing is out of order.

Is that what that strip is for? Joke! But it kinda seems like a holdover from the olden days of carbon slider card imprint machines. I can't think of the last time a store cashier asked me to hand them my card. Restaurants are different but waiters certainly don't seem to care. I do get asked for ID at retail stores but I suspect it's more to match the names up and *maybe* compare the photo to my face.

I've seen some great counterfeit IDs so "SEE ID," isn't secure. This is especially true with out of state ID, since people aren't always familiar with them. I always decline to show ID. It's a form of card suppression that is against the network guidelines on accepting a card. Merchants can ask for ID but are highly discouraged from doing so, however they cannot make it a condition of the sale. I report offenders and they are always in compliance within a few weeks after being reported.

I did that years ago, but now I just sign my name.

ive seen both ends of the spectrum. Many places if its under $25 or $50, you don't even need to sign. You just swipe and go. Then I see the other end where they ask for my I.d. Since reading this forum, I learned that legally they aren't supposed to do that. But I don't make a big deal, and just show them my D.L.

technically, the stores are protecting themselves and NOT the consumer when they ask for I.d. If our cc were stolen, we wouldn't be responsible for the charges. But if the card is stolen and the purchase is made, its the store that gets the short end of the stick. I know. I have an online business (where obviously I can't ask for I.d., but do require address verification and the cvv from the bsck of the card.) I have been the victim of fraud a few times and lost money, when the cardholder claimed that the card had been stolen and/or they didn't authorize the purchase. Same rules apply to brick and mortar businesses.

The chargeback process doesn't ask if you saw ID, besides who will remember a specific transaction 30-120 days later, when the chargeback hits? It's not like you can say "oh my cashier checked his ID, it's a valid charge."

I also think some of these things are about creating barriers and discouraging card use. If someone steals my cc and tries to use it, and the cashier asks for their I.d., its not going to say, "bichonmom." So, the cashier wouldn't put thru the transaction (or the thief would be frightened off), and the store would therefore be saved from a chargeback when I would later call and say, "my cc was stolen and I never went to X store and made that purchase." But if the store doesn't ask for id and puts thru the purchase, and then I call and say my cc was stolen, then the store will lose that money. I'm not responsible and the banks don't cover the loss. It's a part of doing business.

eta: it doesn't prevent it, but it does discourage it. One is more likely to refuse to show I.d. when they are legit. I could be wrong since I'm not a thief, but I'd think that a thief would be too intimidated or concerned about drawing attn to themselves, and wouldn't make the purchase If asked for I.d.

About half my cards have SEE ID on them. the rest are blank Lazy and haven't bothered to put SEE ID.

Place most likely to request my ID whether the card has SEE ID or not. is a Wendy's Hamburger place about 2 miles from my house. For every purchase whether its $5 or $35. Like I'm going to take a stollen AMEX or Chase Freedom to Wendy's for dinner.

Other places that have requested my ID is Walmart when my purchase is over $100. But usually never get asked for my ID. Which is what the cashiers are told to do during training. I was a cashier and CSM (customer service manager) at Wal-mart for 5 years.

I think most of my other purchases are online if they are over $100, or for motels where they have allready seen my ID as part of the check-in proccess. Or resturants where I can't rember ever being asked for an ID.

I put "SEE ID" on my cards as well. As far as user agreement the moment you activated the card you agreed to all the terms so not signing it afterwards is null.

I went to Best Buys couple days ago and the girl asked for my photo ID and then thanked me, I thanked her back for checking it.

The problem I see is people get so mad when merchants ask for a photo id that they simply stop asking after some point.

They are only trying to protect you and people get angry. I just don't understand people these days.

My sister nor parents NEVER sign the back if their cards. as soon as they ask for ID THE CAHSIERS JUST BASE IT OFF IF THE NAME IS THE SAME AS THE ONE ON THE CREDIT CARD. NEVER HAVE HAD ANY ISSUES BECAUSE THEY DONT HAVE A SIGNATURE ON BACK OF THE CARD. Thats the good thing about Sams Club Discover your picture is already on theh back so they shouldnt even bother with asking for id because your face is already on the back hahha
