My goal cards

So I wanted to set down my goal cards and get some feedback. My goals are very modest considering a lot of the posts here, but as a single mom, I just don't have the kind of disposable income to throw around to make an Amex or csp worthwhile. I'm in the last two weeks of a bk7, and my plans for 2013 are to both rebuild and save aggressively.

Nfcu trifecta

walmart

jcp

target

barclays nfl or itunes

amazon

Those are the cards i want because i know i will use them regularly, maybe down the line a disco or Costco Amex because lord knows with two teenage football players I spend enough there to make it worthwhile. I hope I can skip cap1, but if navy decides to be conservative with me then I will go that route. Any thoughts on who I should app with first? Any others I should condider? Ideally I'd like to have three cards by the end of the year and then garden the first half of 2014.

I also want a Valero gas card, are those easy to get as well?

Most store-backed cards are really easy to get...especially Walmart, JCP, and Amazon, since they are GE-backed. However, with GE and with credit card apps in general, try to space out your credit apps. Sometimes applying for too many cards in a short period of time will raise flags with certain lenders (ex: GE with too many of their cards app'd in the same time, Barclay's seeing all your recent inquiries and new accounts).

My recommendation? App for Walmart, JCP, and a NFCU account. Why?

Walmart - Free FICO monthly score with paperless statements, could be approved or upgraded down the road to a Walmart Discover, growth of CL.

JCP - One of the best reward programs out there. Every $100 each month equals 1 $10 coupon, up to 10 $10 coupons PER MONTH! Okay, so I'm biased because I work at JCP...but if it is your go-to department store, then I HIGHLY recommend it. Also another GE backed card, so the credit limit will grow with you went from $500 starting in 7/10 to $5100 by 1/13. If I knew about the every 4 statements CLI request ability, I'm sure it would be even higher!

NFCU - always great to start early in your building with them. they will remember you, so down the road when your scores are fantastic, you'll be getting great limits and rates!

That seems to be the nickname for the Visa, MC, and NavCheck (which is a line of credit/overdraft protection that reports to the bureaus as a credit card).

Thanks for the info on JCP, I really didn't realize they had such a good rewards program, that's just my go-to department store for the boys.

No problem! It is essentially a 10% back card! Racked up $110 worth of coupons from November/December spending due to mostly my mom's christmas shopping XD

Actually on the jcp site, the rewards look very good for a store card. I'd post a link, but I'm not sure that's allowed. Is it an easy card to get? I know its GE, but some are easier than others.

It is a very decently easy card to get. What does your credit profile look like? Any recent baddies or negatives? I had a woman come in one day who's credit was destroyed by identity faud that went on for some time (3 or 4 years without her knowing, i believe). for the past two years she was slowly trying to rebuild from a 300k mortgage and large auto loan the frauder opened up and defaulted on. she was so upset over the denials for CCs that she stopped apping completely for the past year. I told her GE was an easier creditor to app with and will build with you. she decided to go for it, and she got approved for a 500 limit! this woman was seriously about to cry and she was so thankful I convinced her to app for the card! I wished her well on the road to credit recovery and told her to ask for a CLI every 4 statements

Fresh bk and a judgment still reporting. Hopefully I will get that judgment off soon. I think I'd better save the GE apps until my November app spree.

I think that's a safe assessment. GE doesn't really like real recent stuff. Let it age and you'll be good to go!
