I was purchasing some custom golf clubs online for my hubby's birthday and was attempting to pay with my AMEX through paypal. Purchase was DECLINED and I was confused. Thought they had shut me down for a FR.

So I pulled up my account and saw that they had placed a fraud alert on my account. So I called the number, answered a couple of security questions, and confirmed I was trying to make the purchase with Paypal. Gotta love the protection. I'm just glad I was home online and not in the store because I would have been so embarrassed had the card been declined. LOL.

She took the fraud alert off and told me I could make the purchase now. I did just that and it went through fine. Keep up the good work AMEX!

Ooh... if I might add 2 cents here. I had this happen with my Capital One card just a little while back... they let the transactions go through and then blocked my card. I saw it blocked online and called them and they reversed charges and unblocked my card. I was still very happy.

It just happened to me again today with an Amex card. They detected and declined those transactions. Called me on my phone and didn't block my account. They replaced my card/number. Pretty happy here too.

Both organizations have caught fradulent charges and never denied my authentic charges - so I find that impressive in both cases. I would say Amex's approach was slightly better then Capital One's - in my experience of the two. But, I don't love Amex or their Customer Service as I have had issues with them. This rep I talked to today was not bad though.
