Shell won't delete my 30 day late from 3 years ago -- Help!

I submitted a dispute through all 3 CBs for the ONLY late payment that reports on my credit history, which is a 30 day late from Shell Card back in 11/2009. I've had a flawless payment history with them since I opened the card 7 years ago aside from that one missed month. Equifax was the first to complete their investigation on it and apparently Shell got back to them and verified that it was in fact late. Equifax even showed me the information Shell sent over.

What A-holes! I can't believe that Shell would go through the pains to prove a late payment from 3 years ago from a great customer who has been with them for almost a decade!

I had sent a GW letter to them about 6 months ago and got a phone call from their executive office and they said they couldn't delete it and had to report accurate information... blah, blah, blah. Since it's been 6 months, I figured I'd try again with the dispute through the CBs. Doesn't look like I'm getting any dice there.

Should I resend the GW to Shell and keep sending one every month until they do it? Anyone have any recommendations or strategy advice? Just seems pretty crazy to me that they wouldn't flex on such a small thing for such a great customer. Really makes me want to cancel the card, but I know that would only hurt my score.

They have no responsibility to remove accurate information, even for a great customer. I would drop it. I know you want to be forgiven for your mistake, but it just looks like their policy may not be to forgive based on your discussion with their executive office.

Also, think about it from the lenders perspective. They all need to work together to report this information and ensure that they properly risk rate their customers when those potential customers apply. They probably want all other lenders to report accurate information as well. They are just doing their part.

My thoughts exactly. If everyone could go round getting everything deleted, there would be no reason for a credit report since it wouldn't be accurate. Negative information is there to warn other lenders that the customer did not hold up their end of the agreement at one or multiple points in time. They don't just put it there for fun.

No offense, but if the late is correct, they may not remove it. You were late, even so your payment history besides that is perfect. And the cra will not do anything also, because the late is correct.

Sorry for you, but that will be a dead end I guess.

Well, why not go on? You can always try. But if the late is correct, there is no need to be angry about Shell or the CRA. That is my point. But you could be still successful of course.

Why are you even trying to get it removed? Buying a house or car soon? If not, drop it. GWs are for people rebuilding credit. If you aren't, and you have a clean credit report otherwise, this one 30 day late from 3 yrs ago is not significantly affecting your scores.

Yes, slightly different group viewpoint. Now I am sure you can aslo find a group (maybe WeArePerfect.org) that would say "How dare you try to wiggle out of responsibility for your bad behavior. Disputing correct information, and writing endless goodwill letters, drives costs up for businesses, and this gets passed on to us."

Now in my most moral moments, I do feel that disputing (not just GW) correct information IS wrong for those reasons, but the moment passes.

I have a 30 day late from Shell from a little over 5 years ago. If I am ever questioned about it I simply tell them I was traveling and did not have auto pay set up. It was an accident and has never happened again. I ask them to look at the 5+ years of perfect payments and tell them that mistakes happen, we are all human. It works, never has it been an issue.

I would drop it, it's really a non issue if that's your only bad mark.

The reason the tone is different is because the context is different.

If you're rebuilding your credit then yes, you may need to explore EVERY opprotunity to get each and every 30 day late removed from your report if you can.

However, if you're established with a solid history and a nice lineup of credit then 1 30 day late is far from something to worry about.

If your payment history is clean other than that 1 30 day late from 3 years ago then I hardly believe it would be a deal breaker for any lender you might look to establish credit with.

The question to ask yourself is this IMO:

Is it worth the time and energy to attempt to get the one blemish which is probably not even causing me any issue removed from my CR or can I simply let it age until it falls off on it's own?
