US Bank Cash+ - Anyone have luck apping for it over the phone?

Just wondering if anyone has tried getting this card over the phone. I mentioned in an earlier thread that I don't have a US Bank branch in my area and on their website they state you need to apply in a branch.

Figured this info could help out others as well.

I will get approved (I think) once they re-pull my CR to show that 16 or so of my accounts have been closed. The initially denied me for having too many newly opened accounts, but the UW was confident that if I close at least 11, they would have no trouble approving. This encouraged me to go over the top and close anything not useful. I think my CR's are at roughly 9-10 of the accounts I closed showing as closed. I'll wait until the end of next week when at least 12 should be showing across all my CR's as closed and recon my app again.

But to answer your question, it is perfectly possible to apply over the phone.

Wow, this is very useful. Thanks you guys!! I don't have a US Bank branch in my area either. My interest in this card is restored lol. I think I want to app for this instead of Citi Forward for students. I'll do it in July. This is an awesome card, what are y'alls thoughts on it??

Restaurants and Fast Food are 2 separate categories, which is lame as hell, but at least you get 5% straight cash back as opposed to Thank You points, which more than likely have a less favorable conversion rate.

How many accounts did you have open prior to your closing spree?

I think it was around 27. I put a thread up for my closing spree. First closing spree thread this board has ever seen. haha.

I currently have 10 open accounts. 9 bank/cu, 1 store (amazon). Still have two cards to add to that closed list. CreditOne and Cap1 Rewards. I learned my lesson about having store cards which just encourage me to spend to use a coupon or catch a sale when I don't really need something or having bank cards which have no purpose/rewards in my overall credit strategy.

I may actually try to PC my REI visa signature to a US Bank Cash+ when I recon next week so long as they let me keep the intro APR.

Even with just the Forward, for things like Mortgage/student loan payments you get 1:1, and also for $100 gift certificates. If you also have Preferred or higher, everything is at least 1:1. Of course, for now US Bank has the 25% if you redeem $100 at a time. But the forward covers a lot so it's one of my favorites at present!

BTW: there was also a claim that you can apply for the (non-student) Forward via the phone, see if I can find that link. Unless, given all the apps, that was NJTurnpike too!

I applied for the Sallie Mae, but got instantly denied. I reconned the next day, but they wouldn't approve it because I still have one card on a debt payment program. Other than that everything looked perfect, according to the credit analyst.

Not to get off topic, but I looove it. I just received it in the mail yesterday actually but its my number one card when it comes to rewards. It doesn't look special or anything, visually, but its certainly special =p.

Whats the difference between the standard Citi Forward and the Student version? Anything? I'm assuming the studen version is easier to get so that seems like a plus for me haha.

Looking at the Cash+ website, this card seems freaking awesome. What are the cons of the card? How does it compare to a card like Citi Forward and which would be a better choice???

The cons are, the "everyday" categories only give 2% and the 5% categories are either crap (charity, sporting goods stores) or completely emasculated (restaurants and fast food are separate). Other than cell phone, they're pretty meh. Now Bill Pay was a godsend, but they ot rid of it.

3 cons I can think of would be:

1. Cannot apply for it online (and by extension a fear that the phone rep will deny me and tell me to go to a branch).

2. Fast Food and Restaurants are considered seperate categories.

3. It was once an awesome rewards card that has had its program thrashed before.

Other than that, it looks awesome.

It's part 3 that is responsible for a lot of the bad reaction from some (including me). Bill pay was great for many, generating tons of cash back (which is of course why it has gone), similarly for Home Improvement and Airfare. The replacements weren't exciting, except for Bookstores which seems to include Amazon.

It it widely rumored that there will be two more negative changes: the $25 bonus for redeeming $100 will be restricted to once a year (although the impact is less now that it's harder to earn a lot) and capping of the 5%, although that has also been denied recently.

But if the remaining 5% categories look good, it can still be a useful card, with non-rotating categories.

Forward isn't on the web site, and I haven't confirmed that you can still apply, I would suspect not. The student version will have lower CLs and doesn't appear to have a sign-up bonus, the last on the regular forward was 10,000 points after $500 spend.

I have both, and now use the Forward a lot more.
