Denied for Barclay's LL Bean Card?

I was surprised to be denied for a Barclay's LL Bean card that I applied for. Are they typically tough?

They said the three problems they had were:

-Low available credit on existing cards (Probably due to the low limit to begin with, I have one card with a $500 limit and typically don't let utilization get above 20%. I pay it off several times a month just to keep it down)

-Insufficient length of credit history (I'll give them this, the $500 Elan card is one year old, I have an auto loan that's about 4 months old, and prior to that I had an auto loan about two years ago that I paid off in under a year)

-High number of recent inquiries (There should only be two, though I haven't checked TransUnion).

My Equifax score was 703 about a week ago (should have been about the same time this was pulled). The TU score cited on this denial letter was 739!

I thought 739 was quite good, especially considering my age (21), but I guess that goes to show that a score alone won't always help you.

Any input/suggestions?

I may give that a shot...reading around it looks like some folks have had good luck with them by doing that.

I could understand better if the score they pulled was in the high 600s or lower 700s, but I saw the 739 and just about fell over!

Having never missed a payment, always kept a close eye on utilization, and making a pretty solid salary it's just frustrating.

Just tried calling them, got a message saying their office is closed. Guess I'll have to wait until Monday...

Oddly, I recently had the same issue with Barclay's. got denied a second account with them while having a 700+ TU fico. Good luck with the recon! They are decent with recons!

Success (sort of)!

They would only give me $300, but it is what it is. At least I don't have a wasted inquiry now, and hopefully they increase it when they realize I'm not irresponsible.

I wanted a second card to build more credit, but the L.L. Bean card lets me return/exchange orders without paying the return shipping, so given how much I buy from them that's a nice perk.
