Credit cards for foreign citizens

I have questions about this. I have a friend who's been in the U.S. for quite some time, but does not have a green card (I dont know what her official status is). But anyway, she's been back and forth with immigration and it's just been a hassle to get a green card. Does this mean that she can never get a credit card? Or are other banks not as stringent?

it just really depends on the bank itself. different banks have different policies with regards to this. The underwriting requirements are often a bit stricter as well.

BofA is willing to issue credit cards to non-immigrants. You simply have to do the app either in person or over the phone. They will ask you to send in relevant docs as well, such as passport, visa, etc.

Citi and Wells Fargo simply requires individuals to apply in person at the branch, if I am not wrong.

Some banks such as GE don't seem to care about this since it's never mentioned anywhere in T&C.

To be sure, read the T&C before submitting any app. Some banks might change their policies from time to time as well. There are a lot of banks willing to work with people without green card. The applicant is just required to disclose more info, submit more documents and undergo a little more scrutiny.

It's only a problem if that bank doesn't have any presence within your city / state

Most of the time you bring all the documents you have with you, go to the branch, answer the same question as you would in an internet app, have the banker make a photocopy of all your documents, and you'll hear back within 30 days. The only downside is that there's no instant approvals

AFAIK most banks are wiling to give credit cards to non-immigrants. If you have a banking relationship with the issuer it will be much easier to get a credit/charge card from them. The only thing you can do is be honest, and the bank will tell you what you need to do. The most difficult card to get is the first card. Having even just one card is going to open a lot of doors.

I do know for a fact that Citi doesn't require people to apply in person, at least not for the second or later card. Again, it's the first card that's tricky to get.
