Citi AAdvantage 40K Signup Bonus Question

A while back (maybe about a year and a half ago), I applied and was approved for a Citi AAdvantage MasterCard and received a sign-up bonus of 30,000 miles after satisfying the minimum spend requirements within the time frame. I closed the card about a few months later (maybe 4-5?) because I just really didn't have any use for the card.

I just got an email for this 40K signup bonus for the exact same card, the Citi AAdvantage MasterCard. My question is, even though I was previously a cardholder for this card and received the bonus that came with it...will I be able to take advantage of the signup bonus if I reapply and got approved for a new card? I have Googled this and have seen and read mixed reviews and reports but no definitive answer.

Anybody have any thoughts?

I've read here that it is either 9 months or 18 months to reapply. I could not find the thread though yet. I'd just call Citi and ask. It also may be a good time for you to apply for the US Airways card over at Barclay's since in about a years time those dividend miles are going to be consolidated into the AAdvantage program.

I bet you would be fine. You had the MC version so seek out a link for the Visa version. Technically it's a different card (splitting hairs but typically it works). I think the best link I have seen lately is just 30K points for the VIsa with $1K spend in 90 days.

+1 on the US Airways card idea as long as you don't need the points right away and feel the need to muck around with Barclay.

If you login to your AAdvantage account, you might see a link over to the 40k signup bonus. I know I saw it for the MC, not sure about the Visa though. I'm circling both Citi and Barclays for their FF program cards but have not bit the bullet just yet. I'm teasing the sites in hopes that they will SP me and mail me offers in the mail that I will choose between.

Read the details of the offer. It will typically list the timeframe required since you were last a cardholder. Ive seen a year usually.

There is a long thread about this on the FlyerTalk Forum. They report that if you are approved for the card, you WILL get the bonus, despite what the terms say. There are several reports in the thread of people getting this same card twice within 2 weeks and still getting the bonus 2x.
