I have had this card since 2000, a normal Cap One Platinum. Recently I've had success obtaining new credit with higher limits, (AMEX, Discover, Hooters).. I've had good history, but haven't been using the Cap One for a very long time. Anyways, I've tried unsuccessfully several times for a CLI, and have been denied. Is there any reason or anything that I should be doing that would up my chances? I am fairly happy with Cap one and would like to keep the card.. I've tried the backdoor number, and always receieve the "I'm sorry, there are no offers" message. Is this b/c the card doesn't allow for CLI? Should I apply for a new one then merge? Please help

I chatted up a CSR one day about basically the same issue (cap 1 is the lowest cl and highest apr in my wallet) and she stated they want to see usage. She even said just small balance and PIF. That's about all I know.....

They have 3 different Platinum cards. They are tiered for specific maximim cl ceilings on a particular card. You might have reached the ceiling on your particular tier of card.

I know I have and can't go any higher. This has been verified by 2 different Account Specialists.
Yeah I'm pretty annoyed myself, I've been sitting at $2000 for two years now and I definitely use the card. I think I've reached the ceiling, I just also think it's stupid they cannot do product changes if that's what's necessary, and that I have to open and entirely new card to appear on my report......no thanks, not that serious. It can just sit in my drawer or someone else can use it, like my younger brother.

What's odd is I was planning on starting a thread about the same thing today.
This morning I got turned down for an APR reduction! This after being turned down for a CLI last week. Cap 1 is my oldest card, which I got when I had no credit and no job. Has an APR of 21.99%. That was understandable back then. But now years later with a perfect payment history and +760 FICO scores it's ridiculous. Both reps commented that I was a good customer, but apologetically told me I'm only eligible for a lame BT offer. In fact they seemed surprised that I wasn't eligible for more. I mentioned my other cards have higher CLs and lower APRs but it still didn't matter.

Sufficed to say I'm unhappy with Cap One.

I completely agree, KingAdrock! Making existing customers get a brand new card just to improve their terms is a bad policy any way you look at it, IMO, but what makes it even worse in Cap1's case is that they pull all three for every new app.

That policy just makes it easier to find a reason to just take your business elsewhere once you've outgrown their starter cards.

Message Edited by cheddar on 04-04-2008 10:37 AM

You would in effect have a new card with higher limits and still have all the old account history.

My next new card will be Discover or BoA, I'm pre-apped for both. Why get a new Cap One if they're uninterested in treating good customers well? They shouldn't give starter cards if they aren't willing to let the card grow with you.

I completely agree, KingAdrock! Making existing customers get a brand new card just to improve their terms is a bad policy any way you look at it, IMO, but what makes it even worse in Cap1's case is that they pull all three for every new app.

That policy just makes it easier to find a reason not to just take your business elsewhere once you've outgrown their starter cards.

This may have changed. I was just declined for a new card (which they told I needed to apply for since they couldnt change my terms or offer a new CLI). They letter states they based the decision on my history with CAP1 (which has 1 late/overlimit in 4 yrs due to theft of my card) and no bureau reports were pulled.
