@Anonymous wrote:

Hey everyone. I guess you could say I've been "creeping" on the forums for the past few weeks, but I felt compelled to reach out and offer my input on this subject. This is obviously my first post on myFICO, so please be gentle with your feedback on what I'm about to say. I applied/opened a Capital One "Classic Platinum" MC in January 2009 via their website with instant approval. Prior to applying for this card, I had approximately 7 years of near perfect credit history with Citibank, BOA, and 2 auto loans that were paid off at least 3 years early. The only negative factors on my credit report were 1) I had high utilization on my existing cards, and 2) I had approximately $10k in student loans that were in deferment status. Despite these few negative factors, I had 100% on-time payment history (and STILL do) and maintained a FICO that was at least 680. I'm not sure why I applied for this card in the first place, but I regret it every year when I see the $39 annual fee charged to my account.

I realize that Capital One is primarily a "last chance" lender that specializes in helping consumers either rebuild or establish their credit profile; they are providing an admirable service to those individuals that prime lenders initially wouldn't touch. Unfortunately, I did not (and still don't) suffer from credit deficiencies and I STILL cannot convince Capital One to either 1) increase my credit limit, or 2) allow me to PC to a card with no annual fee. My FICO scores have consistently exceeded 730+ and I also hold accounts with AmEx and Discover as well. This makes absolutely no difference to Capital One whatsoever. It seems like they are determined to keep you locked into a card product with an annual fee if you originally opened the account with one. For example, I opened the account 4.5 years ago and was assigned a mere $1k CL, 7% APR on purchases and balance transfers, and the usual $39 annual fee. I'm not exactly sure why they gave me such a low APR on this card when it advertised at between 14-19% at that time.

I've reached out to Capital One via Twitter and have also e-mailed the EO for assistance. I received a call from a lady who simply identified herself by name and referenced my interaction with their social media team. She could only offer me the opportunity to "add rewards" to my existing Classic Platinum account. She stated that this would convert it into their QuicksilverOne Rewards card, but I would still have the $39 AF and the $1k CL. To make matters worse, I held a no-frills HSBC MC that was sold to Capital One last year. The card became a Capital One "Platinum MC" with the same $500 CL, $19 AF, and ridiculous 24.4% APR. How I ended up with this particular HSBC card is a long story, but basically I held a checking account with Fifth Third Bank at one point and while meeting with a branch rep, she submitted an application for a joint Fifth Third-HSBC card without my knowledge. A few months later, I received a nasty collections notice from HSBC in the mail (never received the initial card) regarding the $19 annual fee that was "past due." It was already reporting on my credit file, so HSBC ended up removing the entry and changed the status to "lost/stolen." I decided to keep the card and they issued me another account number and such. I had no clue that the initial 2% APR was only good for 6 months.

In reference to the second card (migrated from HSBC), the lady from Capital One stated she did not have the ability to merge the credit limits, thus closing the old HSBC card with the mere $500 CL and $19 AF. She also stated that there wasn't any "offers" listed on this second account at this time. Big surprise eh?

At this point, I'm at a loss for what to do. Due to living outside the U.S. for several years (i'm a dual Canadian-U.S. citizen), I wasn't planning on moving back to the states and was actually advised to close out my OLDEST account after I moved (due to security/fraud risks). My oldest account happened to be a Citi MC with account history since 2002. Well as luck would have it, I moved back to the states 2 years ago, and was horrified to realize that Capital One had acquired every revolving credit account I currently held...which was the original $1k "Classic Platinum" card, the HSBC Optimum MC, and my HSBC/Best Buy charge card. As I mentioned earlier, I now have cards with AmEx and Discover, but these were opened fairly recent....6 months or so ago. I also closed the Best Buy account earlier this year.

I guess I'm wondering if it would be beneficial for me to just cut my ties with Capital One and just close out these 2 accounts. I refuse to pay $58/year for 2 cards that aren't useful to someone who already carries an AmEx Blue Cash/Premier Rewards Gold and a Discover IT. All 3 of those cards come with generous rewards that are quite useful. My AAoA is supposedly 4.7yrs (according to Credit Karma), but I'm wondering if that's incorrect due to CK not considering my closed accounts.

Any suggestions??

I would try the EO route, as it seems that whoever responded to you was merely from their call center. Usually the EO removes the AF and helps you with a CLI. If you have other cards that are better they will know this when they soft pull your credit report. If your scores are that high there would be no reason they would deny removing the AF, upgrading the account, and raising the credit limit! I have had my AF removed, my credit limit raised twice, and my account changed into the Venture rewards card. (The upgrade was through normal CS.) I also was able to get them to recon a Prime Card app with them into an account. I too have Amex, Discover, and some higher limits. They do want to keep their good customers if they can.

I wish you the best of luck with this. If indeed nothing will be done, then yeah close the account and don't look back. With such a low limit it won't affect your score much anyway.

Last month I started trying to deal with CLIs on Capital One (2 Personal one Biz) and was shot down on each one of them. At that point I decided to try my luck with other creditors and ended up with about 5 new accounts and about $60,000 in new credit. I called back to Capital One and cancelled all 3 cards and sent a nastygram to the Capital One Executive Offices (via email)

Fast forward to today and I received a phone call from the Capital One Executive Offices and the lady offered me an increase on my oldest card of $500. I told her that had I known it was CapOne calling I would not have answered the phone and that $500 was still insulting compared to what Prime creditors were giving me. She asked if there was a minimum I would take if they combined all of the cards together, I told her $10,000. She said she would get back to me in a couple of days but thought that could be doable.

I'm not holding my breath but we'll see what happens. It would be nice if they could figure out what their own policies were!

I don't deal with "regular" CapOne customer service anymore, I just call the Exec Office. That way, I get a polite person to tell me they can't give me a CLI, can't give me a PC, can't combine limits, can't fix the mess-up CapOne caused with the AU on my account, etc... Yeah...
