So I just joined USAA... I assumed I would at some point down the line be able to get a cc from them since I hear they are generous. But since I have no military association it says I cannot utilize any banking products including credit cards. The memebership from what I read was a sp but now I feel it was pointless because I cant ever get anything from them... Should I just close it... open to all as I have never been joined with any membership program before.

USAA recently closed its doors to non-military members, and grandfathered in existing partial members like myself. So I'm not sure how you got in.

When I go to the credit card page, nearly the whole array of USAA cards are available to me. However, it's not clear what kind of terms I would get if I actually applied. There have been reports in the past of partial members with excellent credit getting APRs like 23.9.

When did you join? I got grandfathered in as well (having joined back in June).

Hello,

I just applied the regiualr way. Checked no to all military related questions since I am not going to lie my way in. But I didnt know about all the products that were or were not available to people depending on their military status. I guess I am a partial memeber. I was able to link my external accounts so I could see all at once and create goal, saving plans etc. But when I went to product pages like credit cards specifically it said they cannot offer this product to me because I have no military association. So basically it seems to be just like Credit Karma lol just without the FAKO... ugh

Wow. Maybe you slipped through the cracks somehow. I was under the impression that they had closed the door on non-military.

I think they are a great bank and have an amazing online system.

I guess I must have...but its pretty much for nothing... wish I would have read up a little more before I joined. Oh well at least the website make my accounts look pretty lol

I tried to get into NFCU and even though I was in the AF for a short time in 81'-they wouldn't allow me membership. THAT is crazy.

Remember nothing ventured nothing gained. Call USAA and explore with them what products would be available to you. As a USAA full member I am confused on what they are doing. FNBO closed their doors to potential customers outside their geographic service area. Wonder what is the deal. I cannot get Chase banking products since I am not in their service area. GADS!

I wish I could give you my full membership. I think they are subpar. I never use my CCs with them and they are HP for a small CLI. NO auto CLI's even if you've been with them for 5 years (like me). Their secured cards don't graduate and they don't have good rates on Cds or savings accounts. Their auto insurance is overpriced, although their renters insurance was priced pretty good. I don't know I think you can find a better bank or CU (NFCU!) for just about anything USAA does. Just my two cents, YMMV.

Thank you, I really never thought to call them to see what I could get either now or down the line. I just figured what I saw online was the final hoorah.

@ronstar7: I was in the AF for a few mos. and was medically/honorably discharged. The 3 different NFCU CSR's I talked to all said the same thing: That I'd would have to be currently drawing a medical pension to qualify for membership-which I am not.

Wow, NO banking products at all? Not even a checking account? What do they let you do? Insurance, maybe? I've definitely heard mixed opinions on their rates, think you have to apply to see if it's good for you. I haven't myself, OK with my current agency down the street.

I hadn't heard about limiting the membership to military people. I told my kids they could join, but they weren't interested "right now", and apparently have waited too long now And BTW, it's just as well you didn't try to lie about a military connection. They ask lots of detailed questions, and I got the impression they have access to DoD records to check you out.

Anyway, it's not such a great loss, IMO. SInce others have commented on USAA generally, here's my take, pretty mixed. I joined because I heard their mortgage rates were great, and it was true, got an excellent interest rate, and no escrow like I wanted. But they sold the servicing to GMAC, which went bankrupt, and now I have to deal with "Ocwen", rated in some surveys as the worst loan servicer in America. I did get a good CL (for me -- $20K) on a CC I opened a few years later. But I don't think much of the website. Pretty confused, info I want is strewn across a bunch of different pages far down in various trees. Want to schedule an online payment? That's far off from the account section. Download statements? Another different area of the site. Worst thing is the handling of online payments as they are executed. Website shows them as "completed" (and the receiving institution does credit them), but they still don't debit from the checking account for a day or two. That's not "complete" where I come from.
