No EMV on Chase Sapphire Preferred MasterCard?

I understand that many who have the Chase Sapphire Preferred have recently gotten EMV (Chip and Signature) versions of their cards and I just called in to request one on my account as it seems that we are transitioning to this new technology. However, I was told by Chase that they are not offering the chip card to MasterCard accounts. I was told that I had to convert my account to a Visa card in order to get the chip and signature feature. I told the guy "thanks, but no thanks...I would rather keep my card as a MasterCard."

After some further research this seems to be valid. Either way, has anybody with a CSP MasterCard been able to get a chip version? I also understand that Chase seems to want to drop MasterCard completely and offer Visa products only...and that all current MasterCard account holders will eventually get Visa cards. Is this true? Can anybody shed some light?

It's hilarious, I actually got 5 non-emv cards in the mail after calling in multiple times and they didn't know why. They said they were going to completely drop Mastercard from some of their cards so I just converted to a Visa right there so I didn't have to deal with it in the future. So I should be getting an EMV card soon.

I think you can get the signup bonus again by applying for the Visa card. At least you used to be able to. That's what I'd be more concerned with. And then you can get your EMV chip.

It's that time of the year where Visa is more popular than Mastercard, same thing is happening with Citi with their thankyou cards. Premier & Preferred now only come with Visa unless you were preselected for a MC.

Chase will be phasing out MasterCard by early next year. Co branded cards are to be the exclusion.

I've been watching this recently too, and I am wondering what it means for Mastercard. Are the banks trying to phase it out as a payment network in the U.S. (at least the big ones)? I know oddball CUs, Capital One, and some other small issuers are decidedly Mastercard, but I keep seeing the big banks switching to Visa.

I haven't and was told the same thing -- after receiving a non-EMV replacement when I requested one with EMV.

As part of Chase expanding their relationship with Visa, they are moving all of the Chase branded products (Freedom, CS, CSP, Ink, Slate) to Visa. Existing MasterCard accounts will be issued a Visa or Visa Signature card beginning in 2014. Afaik you can no longer apply or convert into a MC version of the aforementioned products effective 11/1. This is what I was told via SM so take it with a grain of salt

I bet this was somewhat motivated by a desire to cut down on sign-up bonus chasers who applied for both Visa and MC versions of a card offering. It's too bad Visa won out though.

I doubt it. I would imagine it has a lot more to do with getting a better deal from Visa on fees for using their payment network in exchange for moving over several card products.

I asked Chase about this today. It's confirmed that all Chase branded Mastercards (Freedom, Sapphires, Slates, etc) will be moving to Visa cards by early next year due to an "expanded arrangement with Visa". So there is no reason for you to turn down the EMV-chipped Visa card since you'll be swapped to a Visa card anyway in the next few months.

For me, the Chase Freedom I have is one of the rare Mastercard versions (upgraded from a Slate card that was Mastercard years ago). When Chase transitions me, that will leave my BofA Cash Rewards as the sole Mastercard in my wallet (3 personal Amex, soon to be 5 Visas and 1 Discover).

I actually called Chase today as well and spoke with a nice gentlemen who told me that Chase is indeed looking at converting all Chase-branded cards (not partner cards like United, GM, etc.) to Visa to keep all of them "streamlined" as, he put it, in terms of benefits, better service, etc. for their customers. He did however, tell me that Chase does not have any plans to convert my current CSP MasterCard into a Visa and that the only way it would convert is by customer request. What he did confirm is that Chase is no longer currently issuing new accounts (Slate, Freedom, Sapphire) under the MasterCard brand, even if a customer calls in to request a change to MasterCard.

Basically, what it sounded like he told me was that Chase has no current plans to convert any account to Visa that currently is a MasterCard. So, if anybody out there prefers to keep their Chase credit card account a MasterCard like I do...don't change anything. In the future you may be one of the few people who has a Chase MasterCard.

Yes at some point in the future, one site says upon card expiry but the memo mentioned other triggers such as requesting a replacement card that could set off the conversion sooner. An item to keep in mind GeneralCucumbre, that gentleman you spoke with would likely not be priviledged to any upcoming strategy decisions that are usually made at the top. While he may have general knowledge of what is in current state, he ultimately would not know until most changes are due to occur. Therefore, what mxp114 mentioned above is in line with the changes that are foreseeable for 2014 as they expand their Visa relationship with their mainline, non-cobranded cards.

Chase just told me that the CSP Mastercards will be switched to Visa around December 16th and mailed out shortly thereafter. The old MC cards will still work untill January.

I'd suggest doing what I did, I emailed [MOD CUT] directly expressing my discontent. Got a phone call from the executive office a day later. Customers should voice their concens...

I was notified that Chase is in the process of ending the relationship with Mastercard, and my Chase Sapphire Preferred card will have to be 'converted' to a VISA.

I want to express my discontent of Chase limiting my consumer choice, and forcing me to switch my card products all to VISA.

I already have 2 VISA cards with Chase, having a Mastercard gave me opportunities to attend Mastercard-only events, and purchase from Master-card only vendors. Now Chase is limiting my ability, and as a result will have to close this account and open a Mastercard with another bank.
