Recent College Grad + First Job: Apply for United rewards card?

I'll be a recent college grad with a job offer with a very good salary but I have not started working yet. Can I apply for airline miles rewards credit cards, like United and Delta, before I actually start working?

For college, I've been an authorized user of my parents' cards, and they have an excellent credit history. Is this enough for me to apply for these rewards cards on my own? Or, do I need to open a student credit card and build some of my own credit beforehand?

Yes, I have no car, no student loans, and no debt.

I've been an AU for about 3 years... credit history report is high 700s.

What are INQs?

Welcome to the forum. If you want an airline cc that will consider AU history, go with Barclays Arrival. Chase usually discounts AU history so United may be a stretch. Amex Delta or Blue Sky is another alternative.

I have no income now but have proof of income for next year, a little less than 6 figures.

What about Chase Sapphire or Amex SPG?

He is probably a programmer. Even if he is not, if you're shooting for a six-figure, that's a good route to go

Original poster: Chase is a little picky. I don't know if they will be happy to give you your first self-authorized credit card with a substantial limit (the minimum limit on this card is 2k). That is unless you have a good amount of assets with them; 10k at least. It doesn't really cost you anything to give it a try though. If the application doesn't go through, then get an easier card then shoot for this card again in 3 months or so.

Ok - I thought that if my application is rejected, then my credit score would be lowered? Is that not true? Also, I heard that the more credit cards you apply to, each time also lowers your score?

What bank do you currently use for savings/checking? That might be your best route.

I know lots of people that graduated recently that had banked with chase and were approved for Freedom, then a couple for United and CSP.

My family currently uses Chase bank.

I am an AU for Chase Freedom right now, but am interested in mostly United or Delta airlines, Amex SPG, and Chase Sapphire.

Do you have a personal bank account? I probably would tell you to app for United and enter your post-grad salary on the application and see what happens.

For real, I'm an attorney and I don't make close to 6 figures.

OP: Chicago is a major United hub, is it not? zIf so, I would favor that card over Delta Amex. They have an upcoming devaluation on their miles, but it mainly impacts international first class rewards. I would consider applying for Chase Freedom now, using it responsibly and applying for United Explorer when you have a little history.

Your score will be lowered but will rebound quickly. After 6 months the impact is minimal.
A more substantial and permanent damage is done when you actually get a new card which lowers your average age of accounts.

To the OP: I was in your same shoes last year. Just graduated college with a starting salary ~90k. My credit history consisted of a worthless Wells Fargo card and as an AU on a couple of my parents cards.

I applied and was approved for the CSP. Wait until you have your first check in handin case Chase asks for proof of income. Your salary will balance out the lack of a longer credit history.
