Where have you used your EMV chip in the US?

This morning I went over to my local "mom-n-pop" florist to purchase some X-mas items, and BAM....they inserted my card in the ACTIVE EMV READER, I was surprised. Next stop, headed over to the grocery store, same thing happened. I know the 2015 deadline is right around the corner, but since the holiday shopping season has kicked off, I am starting to see a lot of EMV Reader's. By the way, I'm from NY!!!

The only place locally I've seen a terminal which supports EMV is 7-11; however, it seems to not be active. I've ocsionally tried it since getting emv in my amx plat and not once has the machine reacted to my card being inside it .

Yes best buy, starbucks and 7-11, I've use my amex plat with chip.

I personally have never seen a place that accepts chip and pin or maybe I just haven't noticed. Have a bunch of cards with chip but never used it or been to Europe, would definitely want to use that feature sometime.

Funny. I was wondering about that a few weeks ago. I have never seen any place that has the device in the US. I have only used outside the US so far (Mexico and Colombia).

I feel like I came very close the other day. I was eating at a German place here in Texas. The guy brought out the bill and I put my card in the folder. He comes up and brings a portable terminal with him, like they do in Europe. It had a spot for EMV, and the CSP I used had a chip. He did not swipe it EMV, mostly likely because he does not usually encounter those type of cards. But, it did have spot to insert a chipped card.

Does it allow you to swipe a chipped card, or does it insist the reader is used?

If it's active, it'll insist on the chip being used. Without that check, EMV is pointless.

Now, I'm suspicious of the people saying they've used it at Best Buy (has EMV readers, but I've never seen one active) and at Starbucks (doesn't have EMV readers in my neck of the woods at least) in the US. In Canada? Of course.

Using the stripe doesn't count as using it for this purpose, that will obviously work.

Tested a European chip&pin Mastercard at 7-11 and bam... to my big surprise requested the pin ...wow ..... desperately waiting for chip&pin everywhere....LOL

Glad to hear that! No 7-11 near me. Can anyone confirm that there are any active Starbucks or Best Buy stores? Again, in my area, Best Buy doesn't use the chip, and Starbucks isn't EMV at all... I thought that was the case US-wide.

My understanding was that EMV was limited to a handful of Walmart stores plus some merchants using Chase Paymentech

I swiped my PRG at everyday music (a chain in the Pacific Northwest) and it insisted the chip be inserted. The receipt also showed chip as the method at which the card was read.

I've used a European chip+pin debit card in a new Citibank ATM. It displayed a usual prompt like "Insert and quickly remove your card", what I did. And then it somehow understood that the card has a chip and wrote "Please insert your chip card" in different languages. So I inserted the card again and it was locked in the reader until I completed the transaction. So it definitely worked with the chip, but it was kind of weird compared to ATMs in Europe that normally just swallow your card right away, regardless if it has a chip or not.

Not sure, it was a little silver handheld pinpad with the discover, amex, visa mc logos on the top. I don't remember seeing any chase logos and I probly would have noticed.

I'm glad to hear that there are more merchants accepting EMV in the United States. I'm hopeful that, awful as the situation is, the Target situation today and the URM Stores (local to Washington/Idaho/Montana but large enough breach I'm sure merchants are talking about it) will cause a fire to be lit in the direction of EMV migration.

Any updates? I've yet to have a transaction run as EMV within the United States, so I'm curious where people are seeing it happen.

The establishments I've used it at, 7-11, Best buy, Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts and Subway(sandwich place).
