I assume you have multiples from the same lender?

I only use a few cards out of all cards. Most of them retail cards.

My guess is from my preferred viewpoint, reward-maximization-per-transaction, there is little gain in adding bank cards after a certain point (which might be quite large) just because there isn't a huge variety of different reward categories in bank cards, (more in reward types, so groceries can give cash back, UR points, AA miles, Hilton points etc. I guess a case could be made why you need each type of reward.) But we don't (often) get cards with special rewards for blue books, objects made in India etc. But certainly with retail cards the sky is the limit, as at a store there can be some purchases that are cheaper with that store's card than any other card. So 101 isn't nearly enough....

Best of luck to you on that. My experience with PNC's credit card has been subpar, and in fact The CashBuilder was the card that I SD within the last week.

For the record, I LOVE PNC as a whole, or at least I LOVE my Virtual Wallet. The only reason we decided to open the credit card was to help build a relationship with the bank.

My husband applied for the card about a year and a half ago, when I added him on to my VW account. At the time he had 2 credit cards, a USAA cl $4800, and a Cap1 at $500. Both cards always PIF, utilization less than 10%. His score had just broke 700. After a week of going back and forth with the bank manager we were working with they said he was declined. I spoke with the manager and gave a whole **bleep** spiel, and the manager went and reconned for us... they ended up approving him for 1k. OK. Like I said he had a super thin credit portfolio (not even a car loan) and our income was lower.

So we don't use this card for a couple of months, and then one day I decide to put all of our internet, utilties, automatic drafts on the card. Since it is a smaller limit it was not unusual for the card to get to about 30% utilization. Always PIF. Asked for a credit line increase, they give us $500 (after waiting to hear back about a week), so the CL is now $1500. Not too bad. Continue to use, continue to PIF, etc etc. Asked for a cli this past December. This time I waited 3 weeks to hear back.

$100 increase. This after paying in full every month since we started using it, banking with them, never overdrafted, never even came close to such a thing, a healthy savings account for our modest income (our income had gone up, btw).... he had also added 2 more credit cards, a Venture (3k) and an Amex (2k).... overall utilization kept between 8-10%, sometimes even less.

Soooo.... all this came on the heels of me having a very bad customer service experience with an Afterhours rep (the credit card team does the checking department's after hours).

Needless to say, while I love my Virtual Wallet, I really dislike the credit card. It has not been a totally bad experience, but not a good experience, either. That being said you might have better luck having longer history and a credit card already with them... but if you want your decision you may have to stay on their butts. And if you want a creidt line increase you may have to ride them for that, too.

If I were to guess I would say you are correct... it is because our income is not that high, and his credit history is still relatively new.

Husband is a frugal bug and not really big into credit. He is also one of those "I hate paying interest!" type of people. He has never had an auto loan, and the credit cards he has have all been acquired with me. He has been building and has been exemplary, a lot better than I was when I was first building credit.

As for our income his alone is 30k; in our VW we have about 17k, savings, reserve and checking. Our checking usually teeters around 600-2k a month. So we are not high rollers, by any means. But I feel like we have been soooo faithful and good customers to them. We have maintained good balances, opened the credit card, heck even my HSA is with PNC.

PNC cc has a luv button in the VW (don't know if it does stand alone). When you hit the luv button the minimum you can request is your current credit line. Honestly, I only wanted a 500 bump (to be more in line with his other credit limits and also to help with utilization when it came to our automatic drafts that came out on that card), but I had to request 1.5k, I figured I wouldn't get the full increase, but I thought they would meet me in the middle. Ahhh well...

Anywho, as with all credit cards YMMV... they can be a terror to me, and amazing to others. I am sure if our income was higher and we had more deposits/history they would be giving us all kinds of luv.

Are the CLI requests HP or SP?

I'm actually more interested in PNC from a banking perspective. Only $5000 required for fee waiver on their performance select accounts, which are quite decent in terms of fees (free wires both in/out, ATM reimbursement world wide, etc). Most other banks require much higher balances for that kind of treatment.

For the Santander, you might be out of the area. We are all GPs here. We took a chance to apply for the card. We came back back with the result and feedback.

We are helping each other. That's what we are here.

Ron.

This after paying in full every month since we started using it, banking with them, never overdrafted, never even came close to such a thing, a healthy savings account for our modest income (our income had gone up, btw).... he had also added 2 more credit cards, a Venture (3k) and an Amex (2k).... overall utilization kept between 8-10%.

Soooo.... all this came on the heels of me having a very bad customer service experience with an Afterhours rep (the credit card team does the checking department's after hours).

Wow, are you serious?! That seems like a LOT of work barbaralee! I just can't imagine with your VW and banking relationship why the CC-side of things if just, well not as *stellar*.

Well, I'm glad you posted your experience this evening since I was on the fence and Ron is my/our guinea pig (well for this product at least) since it is also available in my area as well. I guess I have heard mixed feelings about PNC CCs in general. Definitely heard/read about the low CLs. They tend to be your BFF if you have a large deposit relationship. Hmmm, this sort of makes me ponder...

I know, I can honestly not understand what the deal is, either.

Well, you definitely bring up some great points and insight on your experiences so I definitely appreciate that. From what I recall not long ago, PNC sort of adopted the former National City Bank's lending policies, which ironically tend to be *frugal* or conservative to some context. But, I would at least believe that based on your overall deposit, banking and HSA relationship that there would be a little more *love* on their end to approve a higher CLI, not by just $500 or $100...MORE! I guess, depending on Ron's outcome, I'm going to see which way the wind blows...LOL. If the results are promising, then I might take the plunge

And here's the thing, speaking of banking relationships and whatnot, I applied for the SU2C MC with Fifth Third Bank initially on 12/18 but after flunking one identity question it locked the app and had to go to the branch on 12/20. So here I was, no banking relationship, not even a Fifth Third knick knack for show. Zip. Nada. I was aware they are on the very conservative side much like Key Bank (But Key Bank is meh IME). Well, after a little ordeal with the app, back and forth with the banker, underwriting and then fax this, email that, etc, it was finnaly approved on New Year's Eve day. I shared with Ron the experience so I was very suprised on the approval due to not having the relationship...so I guess it was one of those YEMV.

How can you possibly manage 101 credit cards? I assume you have multiples from the same lender?
