This is long so I'll try to condense it as much as possible. I'm graduating from law school next year. Me and the wife had a mini honeymoon but we want to do a huge trip after I take the Bar exam. We will go From Chicago with stops in Toronto, Japan, Bangkok, Shanghai, Sydney and San Fran before heading back to Chicago. We won't require a hotel in Toronto, SF, or China (family and friends in those places). So basically we have to pay for about 12 days of hotels and flights. We plan to fly for free and stay at awesome hotels through some new CC's. The only thing I'm worried about is whether we can get approved for all of these cards in time.

What I have currently, that will be useful for the trip:

1. 60k Priority club points (my priority club visa bonus). Good for three nights in the Crowne Plaza Bangkok.

2. 60K Delta miles (enough to get us to Toronto).

3. 57K United miles (from my CSP bonus).

What we need.

9 more hotel nights.

178k more United miles.

How I plan to get the 9 hotel nights:

My wife needs to get the , Priority Club Card (60K points worth 2-3 nights), Citi Hilton Card (2 free weekend nights, at almost any Hilton world wide), Chase Hyatt (two free nights at any Hyatt) and

I need to get a Citi Hilton Card (2 free weekend nights, at almost any Hilton world wide), Chase Hyatt (two free nights at any Hyatt)

This will cover the hotel stays.

How I plan on getting the miles:

I need to get the United Miles Explorer Card (55K miles)

My wife needs to get the United Miles Explorer Card (55K miles), CSP (45K miles).

That's 155k miles. Still leaving us about 23K short. But we pay most things including rent, with our CSP or freedom so we are spending about 3K a month on our chase accounts that can be turned into United miles. That spend should easily get us to 23K miles in a year.

What I need help with:

How should we go about getting these cards?

My profile: CS 675 Tu 670 EQ (because of last months app spree), No missed payments on any CC, Stated Income 75K, one baddie that will fall off TU in October, EX in December. 7 Inqs on TU, 10 on EX, 8 on EQ. I have a chase Checking account, the freedom and CSP among other cards TL available Credit 40K. 20K in the Chase account. Oldest account 3yrs ago AAoA 10 months.

My wife's profile: CU 734 TU 708 EQ. Opened two CCs in January but is AU on some of my bigger TLs. Stated income 50K, no baddies has a joint chase checking account with me. Available credit is 32K. Oldest account is 2 years AAoA is 8 months.

Is it even possible to do this before say June. SO I can meet the minimum spend and have it post to the account? I recently had an app spree so I'm gardening for about 6 months but I just want to make sure I don't lose out on the explorer offer. It's already reduced to 30k for some. I checked today I still have a targeted 50K offer and so does my wife? She we go for the Explorer now? What order would you app?

Thanks for reading.

Thanks. it's basically 3 new cards for me over 10 months. Is that really that bad? I don't currently have any citi cards. My wife technically has only 2 cards so I don't think it would be too crazy for her to get 4 cards over ten months. But like you said it's a ton of Chase cards. I already have three and she is an AU on the CSP as well.

You can do it but you are going to need a slight bump in your score. Don't do anything until you get far enough above 700 so that the next cards you apply don't let you slide below 700 once you see the INQ point hit.

You have 4 quarters until departure correct? Might as well have 3 as you need some time to make the spend to get the rewards posted to your account. You also need time to use those points before departure. You mention your apps last month so you are on hold for 2 more months (remember 91 days between apps - time to recover, make the spend and start looking good). Do you have a relationship with your Chase branch? If you do, and it's good exploit it - in a good way. Tell your banker or the person you talk to your plans in detail. The trip, the honeymoon after you pass the Bar exam. Don't come out and ask for a certain card, just drop some hints. Do this over several visits (if you don't visit the branch start making a point to do so). They all have quotas that need to be met - cards, accounts opened etc. You are going to help them and they are going to help you. You have two months to warm them up to helping then app in branch for another card.

Here is the way I would do it (this considers your wife is ready to go now):

Wife apps for United. Same time (same day not same moment) she apps for Citi Hilton.

Once you hit 91 days you app for United. See if you can get same offer honored in branch to help them out. Also ask if your wife can get same offer in branch...

After she hits 91 days she apps for Hyatt. She can reapply for the Citi Hilton if she was denied last time (but she won't be).

After you hit 91 days you app for Citi Hilton (this gives you 182 days between Chase apps).

After she hits 91 days she apps for CSP.

After you hit 91 days you app for Hyatt. You also app for Citi card. If denied for too many INQ wait 30 days and try again - or go for the AMEX version and take the points and run.

Obviously you keep all cards clear and PIF before statement posts. If you would like let a small amount post then pay it off well before it's due. This is your trump card "yes but I have great credit, I use my cards and always PIF" and you can use that if needed for recon. You are a great customer, very low risk.

Be aware Chase has internal limit they will let you have across all cards. You might be to a point on this path that you need to make a deal to get a new card. If there is no other way to get the card offer to move some limit around to get the new card.

I like that you two are working the cards together and have a plan for the rewards. The wife and myself have been doing the same. Her score has bested mine but I am the product of a lot of INQ for recent (12 months) apps for personal and business. I'm close to overtaking her again but it will soon be time for me to app again (or I hold off and ponder a commercial real estate purchase). Her next round is in a few weeks.

Some of the cards you listed have an AF.

Not all AF are waived in the first year either.

Unless you plan to stay at those hotels or use those airlines a lot in the future, this is a very bad idea.

If you have to pony up for the AF, meet the spending requirements for the bonus, AND take a hit to your CR just for a few nights / flights, it's really not worth it.

You are pretty much better off either working for that money, get a 0% card to put your travel expenses on, or just change your plans entirely.

It sounds like you have a budget to stick to. Rather than staying at Hyatt or Hilton, why not just stay at a cheaper hotel? Not as fancy, but at least you're not jumping through hoops. And maybe you should reconsider about your destinations and be a little less ambitious.

Also, If you are able to meet the minimum spending to qualify for the bonus, I don't understand how you have trouble paying for the trip directly either. You probably will save a lot more time by just booking the trip via discount sites such as priceline. This is going to be better for your CR as well, especially if you plan to get a mortage in the near future.

Or alternatively, just apply for a card with 0% promo APR and put your travel expenses on it.

If their files are strong enough, then churning can be very beneficial here. They actually aren't taking on THAT much in annual fees compared to the benefits they can get and if they are meeting the minimum spend through everyday spending(especially if their rent is fairly high), they are losing out there either since much of the spend is relatively low. (Hyatt is 1K for example)

I do sugguest trying to get these cards as soon as possible though. Simply so you can get rewards to post and make sure you can get the rooms you want at the hotel you want since some can fill up quickly. You plenty of time, yes, but I would say try to have the rewards all posted two months before the trip at least.

OP, if you need or want to cut down on the Chase cards, you could look into the Club Carlson Visa instead of Hyatt. You'd have to research that more yourself though.

Honestly.... I wouldn't even waste points on hotels in places like Thailand, you can find plenty of very nice local hotels for fraction of the costs. Save them for Europe and Japan/Korea expensive areas imo. In Thailand very clean and nice hotel with rooms that can rival Crown Plaza (without all the amenities) should run about $40 a night at max. $100 should get you a penthouse room in some nicer small places with Jacuzzi in your room with a nice balcony.

I would say hit Chase first for wife and apply for Priority, Hilton, United in order on same internet window. hopefully get at least 2 on instant and 3rd on recon... might want to do it during business hours so you can recon in minutes. if you have issue after 2 then stop... if you get recon pretty easily on 2nd, then do 3rd... if you get 2 instant and 3rd easy on recon then maybe hit 4... otherwise then after the 2 or 3 hopefully sit for the 91 days or whatever someone said.

i would follow with citi back to back same day as chase... but after chase.

for you I would do Citi then do chase since you already have so many chase that's either going to help you enough to outway the inq or it's going to hurt you enough where you are better of hoping for the citi's to go through easy.

be sure to consider some of the cash cards out like a barclay or someone that you can get $300-$400 cash bonus and just pay for the hotel. IF your chase poses issues.

@Anonymous wrote:

Thank you enharu, it's refreshing to read a post like yours. Many times people just agree with whatever the OP says. While I liked your analysis I just completely disagree with it. First, I don't just jump into anything. I research like crazy and double check then triple check things. It's a litte crazy but I enjoy it. So yes I know which cards have annual fees and which don't and I know how much the spend is and how I'll meet it. And no I don't get the same deal from places like priceline or expedia.

If you put in my trip to Expedia the flights alone are well over 5K. That is only in Economy. In my scenerio we'd be flying to Tokyo Business/first. If you add that in there then you're looking 15K. And the hotels I'll be staying at aren't holiday inn expresses. For instance, we could stay at the Park Hyatt Sydney overlooking Sydney Harbour for free. I looked it up in Expedia for some random weekend in January it's $1,826. We'd never be able to stay at a place like that on our own, at least not for some time. So AF is worth it to us. Maybe that doesn't mean that much to you but we'd like to do it and to us it's worth the $95 AF.

Next you talk about meeting the minimum spend. For us that's not a problem. First, the minimum spends aren't that much on most of these cards. it's between 1-2.5K for all the cards except the CSP. We pay everything on our cards and then immedately PIF. I have 40K worth of credit which I put 4K of spend on last month and I currently have a total balance of 550 (which is already paid). We put anything we can on cards including stuff like my books for law school which is about a 600 a semster. Our rent which is almost 2k. Anything for the car, food, gas, tickets, clothes, phones, plus my wife buys stuff for her job and is reimbursed. I do the same thing for my clinics in law school. I'm going to India this winter. I have to buy my ticket and they'll reimburse me. That's 2K right there. That doesn't mean we are rich we just strategically use our cards.

Lastly you talk about keeping the cards. We will keep some and close some. That's what credit is about. Figuring out what works for you. We will for sure close the Citi Hilton because the points are so devauled. We will also probably cancel the Hyatt card because we basically get all the same perks on the CSP. But we like intercons so we will keep our priotity club open (it doesn't hurt that we get a free stay every year). My wife will surely keep her CSP and we might keep the United Explorer open for the free bags as we fly United a lot.

So hopefully that clears things up a bit. We would basically be getting a 20K honeymoon for about 1,200 in fees and taxes. We are frugal and would never be able to stay in places like this but my wife is awesome and she deserves it. We will each cancel about two cards after the trip so I dont even think the credit hit will be that big.

I would say half of the time when they notice you had the cash, they'll offer you cash discounts. It's just a targetted offer. Just transfer some CSP UR to your Mileageplus and check https://www.theexplorercard.com/MPYoureIn30kAFW.aspx. If that doesn't work, basically clear your cache and try again. Also, some people applied for the 30k offer, and then sent a secured message to Chase about the 50k offer, and Chase gave them that. YMMV on that.

Citi has a 2 app in a 60 day period rule. However, the good thing is that you can double-churn Citi cards. Basically you can apply for 2 of the same exact cards (except AAdvantage), and qualify for the sign-up bonus twice. You can consider doing that if you feel that you're doing too much Chase and too little Citi. American Express also has a Hilton card that you can check out. At least this way your apps are spread across different lenders.

Also, lufthansa airlines World MC, backed by Barclays, has a 50k sign-up offer. Lufthansa is part of Star Alliance, just like UA, so you can use those miles to book any UA or Star Alliance flights.

Based on your scores right now, what is your utilization? I would say get your util low, wait for the baddie to fall off in December, and you can go on a nice app spree. Like scenery_guy said, your wife can pretty much get the process started now. For your case it depends on what baddie you're talking about. Is it just a 30 day late? Or is it an unpaid collection?

The baddie is a collection that I refuse to pay. It was from a cellphone that was placed on hold while I was in the Army. Cingular was sold to AT&T and by the time I came back to the states 4 1/2 yrs later and called At&T they told me they had no records of my account, so I figured it was just deleted. I checked my credit about a year later and there was a CO account on there that was already over 4 years old. I did inquiries sent in paperwork but no matter what I did the CO said they wanted full payment and still weren't going to remove it. Just mark it as paid. So I told them I'll just wait it out. The waiting stop this year .

Thanks for the advice so far guys. I'll keep you guys updated on this little journey. I was going to wait to apply for most of the cards but everyone said that my wife should apply for a few now. So I caved and went with it. She applied for the Priority Club and..... immediate approval plus 80K bonus points. Next, we applied for the Chase Hyatt and we got the 7-10 days message L. We called and reconed and were told to send in a her license and the customer service lady said she thinks it would be approved they just had to verify the address. Then we applied for the Citi Hilton. Once again we got the 7-10 day message called in and answered a few questions and had to send in address verification. We'll call back later today and check. Thanks again for all the help it looks like we're half way there for our cards. We both plan on waiting until December to apply again. We'll both go for the United Explorer, and she will go for the CSP. While I will attempt to get the Chase Hyatt. Then in February I'll try to get the Hilton. Then BTW, my DW's previous highest CL was 1000. The Priority club gave her a CL of $9100!
