Have checking, savings and just over10k in all accounts with them. My banker is pretty keen on me owing to the 50k I have sitting back in Aus and that I will be looking for a US mortgage in a couple of years.

I'm happy to sit back with a $2k limit and my new PRG that will be backdated to 2011 - in 6 months it may be a very different tune

CSP - 7-10 - Denied on Recon. What next?

Well 6 months in the garden (and six months short history) I came out and decided to go for the tough application on a risk as I really need a card that doesn't have forex, travel rewards and a decent limit. Chase recently gave me an auto CLI to $1k last week, and given I had my bankers recommendation figured I'd give this a go so applied in branch.

Called recon up not long ago, asked on application status - initial app was denied for too short history etc. Figured this was going to be the hurdle that I had to cross. So pleaded my case after writing down the things I had going for me (good job, relationship with chase, freedom payment history, how much i spend on reimbursable travel), got it reconned (went to a higher up) - denied because of a lack of a 5k limit or sufficient payment history with Chase to support the application. So much for hammering the Freedom at 2.5k a month - Apparently only your limit matters. From what the representative said, apparently they'd be happier me going somewhere else for credit to get a higher limit and also longer history with them. Wouldn't say that was the best thing to be telling a customer. Interesting also that she used the fact that I got my freedom on a pre-approval against me suggesting it was basically pity credit which I also thought was rather poor form. So not sure where to go from here, feeling rather down especially that line about pre-approval pity (but I guess it was a slim chance in hell anyway).

Still planning on going for a PRG (need this to get a good backdate from my Australian account that I can't yet global transfer), but with no decent revolving credit limit card paying for reimbursable travel is going to be a pain in the backside for an age. If I get the Amex and the backdating takes effect, should I try another recon with chase? or try again before that. Or should I see if I could get a revolver on the same pull as a PRG? Alternatively I guess I could take Discover up on their pre-approval, but thats a bit of a last resort.

I could almost throw up it sounded so stupid saying it but they only have your story and your credit report to go off of in a VERY short window to decide rather to approve you or not and to approve you for what limit... If I tell her I'm just looking to had another card to the portfolio but not use it... credit report alone might get it approved but if I want a limit that matches some of the highest limits in portfolio (or higher in your case) you need to show them a picture beyond just your credit of why that is needed or deserved.

Once you're in that zone with Chase, it's very hard to get approved for the CSP. Your best bet is to get a card with 5k (any card as long as it's not a store card) and hold it for 6 months of history or establish a better connection by getting an Chase card with an easier approval (Freedom). Chase is very picky about this subject.

HUCA (hang up, call again). Do this until they say yes.

How about trying for the Barclays Arrival with AF? They might give you a chance, and TU pulls are cheap.

I don't really understand why Chase won't give you higher limits. I really think you should be focusing on AMEX since Chase get jealous when they see that on your credit reports.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'm going to give it another shot this morning, and then again this afternoon if not successful, having added ammunition from the suggestions made here.

In terms of other options, I will not ever apply for a capital one card. Period. They treated me like crap when I asked for a secured card and there is no way I'd apply through them if they were the last bank on the planet - I would actually prefer to use my Australian cards with horrendous foreign transaction fees.

In terms of other options - is the Barclay Arrival likely to approve on a 6 month history? Its probably a better option for me than a discover, and it does give me a Mastercard - but would they be likely to give a decent limit? In terms of other options, the set of cards I am looking for: CSP, PRG, IHG Rewards/Hyatt, and then after that I'm thinking whether an airline card would be useful for benefits (either AA, US, or Alaska). Another option I guess is to get a no fee AMEX and try the 61 day bump trick if I can pull one in the same pull as a PRG.

In terms of the AMEX, I'm just waiting before checking my reports have updated to reflect the $1k limit and 6 months good payments on the Freedom - I really need to guarantee the PRG goes through as I have a juicy backdate from my Australian card back to 2011 waiting to happen.

My realms of applications - no more than 2 cards to be added. Preferably, spread between two different reports. (I need the AAoA until the backdate kicks in).

Just got off the phone - had a lovely analyst, but unfortunately there is no way that this one is going to get approved. Tried everything but the kitchen sink with it.

Recurring issues are that they want to see more history, history with higher lines, longer relationship with Chase - they say I'm doing all the right things with the Freedom, but its just not going to cut it for the $5k line of the CSP with a short history and only a years relationship with them. So I am pretty sure this closes the door with them on this front - the recon is pointless and I doubt anyone is going to overturn this. So my next question becomes - where to next? I'm about to travel for a conference, its in the US but I really would like to use the spend to earn some decent points via a signup bonus.

Current profile
EX- 4 pulls, 1 is Util, 1 is Cap One (both in March last year), 1 is for Chase in July, another is for Chase just recently.
TU - 2 pulls, both March last year - 1 is Util, 1 is Cap One.
EQ - No Pulls.

History - 6 months, all paid in full, low balances.
Cards - Chase Freedom $1k.

Edit just discovered chase did something naughty - going to call them up and get them to fix my experian immediately.

Further update on proceedings with Chase - while my banker emphasised that a credit increase last week was a soft pull, and the person on the phone repeatedly replied that it was when I asked as I had no intention of incurring another before apping, it turns out they put a HP on my report which I wasn't thrilled about (just checked my experian). So I called up, and talked to the representative - she gave me two options - remove the hard pull, and go back to a $500 line. Or keep the increase and the pull - which for a mere $500 I wasn't that keen on. Well I went one better - asked them to recon the CLI to $3000, after about 10 minutes on the phone - bumped to $2k as a counter. While it isn't a Chase Sapphire, given my short history I am pretty happy with a 3xCLI for my trouble, and I figure thats worth a hard pull

My banker is pretty keen on me owing to the 50k I have sitting back in Aus and that I will be looking for a US mortgage in a couple of years.

I'm happy to sit back with a $2k limit and my new PRG that will be backdated to 2011 - in 6 months it may be a very different tune

@Anonymous wrote:

Chase does not to give the CSP to people that have under a year of credit history. Also, they don't like to give credit to people that don't have atleast another 5k limit card listed ont heir account. I would wait until I got atleast 5k on the AMEX BCE before applying again. Make sure to try the 3x CLI first with them before messing with Chase as Chase loves to pull HPs on CLIs

I'm a bit confused. Do you have amex cards already from 2011 and you just need to get an american version of them? Will your prior relationship with amex count with the US branch? If your prior relationship counts with amex then getting the two amex cards and applying in six months after the amex cli is probably the best course of action.

It's called global transfer program. You just need to meet a set of requirements, which vary based on the country you are trying to transfer the card to. Most of the time, the requirements are: 1 year of Amex account history, primary account holder, proof of employment / income at the new country, etc. As long as the requirements are met, the application is pretty much guaranteed to be an approval.

However, if you are not eligible for the global transfer, then you can at least try to have your MSD changed to your first amex account. Generally they're pretty flexible about doing that at least.
