So back to the Amex MSD thing?

Forgive me for being a complete idiot on this, and I've read many threads, but I just can't wrap my head around how this works!

Okay, so here is the deal.

A family member put me on as an ACM in 1984
I remained on that account until 2011 when membership was canceled. I found out that the family member was going to file BK and I wanted my name off the account.
Family member filed BK (took Amex down for big money..at least $30K)
My credit report still shows those 2 accounts from 1984 in good standing. It shows opened 3/1984.
I apply a few days ago and get approved for 2 CC's.

Sooooo, does this mean that I can request that my MSD be changed to 1984? I think I'm confused because I was an ACM and never had my own account until a few days ago.

EDIT 2/24/14 - Amex changed the MSD to 1992! Boom!

I was hoping that this would be the answer but in my excitement couldn't think it through.

Oh my!! This is great news! This will definitely help with my AAoA because those one of those accounts show that it will fall off this year!

For all I know, they may already have the 1984 date in the system but I can't tell until I get my cards.

Alright, now I can't wait on the mail to come next week.

Yes. You have been a member since 1984.

I don't think so. ACM does not inherit primary cardholder's history. They are an authorised user of the account, but the account is not in their name. When OP opens account in his/her own name, MSD becomes when OP applies for card in their own name.

This seems different from the quoted case. OP WAS an ACM in 1984, and at least at one stage that counted as being a member. So we aren't talking about inheriting: that would be if the family had the card since 1972, and OP got that date when she was added in 1984.

But people are talking about recent change, so don't understand the details either.

Rhaeny's situation and the situation described in that thread are entirely different. Rhaeny was made an ACM in 1984 and thus has been a member since 1984. In the other thread, someone is asking if adding him as an AU will set his MSD as the primary cardholder's MSD.

OP would not inherit payment history but would have a MSD of 1984 on new card and CR's would be backdated to 1984 on primary card.

AFAIK, the recent policy change only affects new members. Those who have been members since before the change aren't affected. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

If she applies for a card (Clear not available), her MSD will then become 2014, and she won't be able to backdate to 1991....2 years before she was born!

Ahhh....I stand corrected! I was under the impression that MSD would not reflect an interruption in continual membership.

So...I added my daughter in 2011, thus if she applies now, she can backdate to that year, and this month, but not MY original year, yes?

Okay now I think I get it. I was actually put on the account in 1984. The primary account holder got the card in the late 70's. So my MSD date is 1984 since that is exactly when I got the card.

So my MSD on MY accounts now should bare the 1984 date because thats when it was officially opened.

I was added as an AU on my Dads account when I turned 18, he was a member for quite some time before that. The account was closed a couple years later. I applied for my own AMEX last year and was given backdating to 2000 when I was added on my fathers account, not 198x when he became a member.

AAoA was the biggest thing holding my credit scores down, as soon as the amex posted I got a 50+ point jump!

So I got my card today, activated it, and then called them about the MSD.

The CSR was like, Oh yes, I see that the date is wrong, let me update that for you.

They changed it to 1992 (not the 1984 date showing on my reports), but hecky yea I'll take that!

So Boom!! Done and I'm just ecstatic about it
