Aaargh! disappointed w/ GECRB

last month i got the offer to upgrade my GAP store card to the visa version. prior to accepting the offer, i called GE twice on separate occassions to ask if the visa card will report a new "open date" account to when i accepted the offer, or will it keep the original account open date of the store card of 05/2012. i was told on both conversations that all info will just transfer offer and the new TL will retain the account opening date of 05/2012. so i thought it would be just like when citi took over the BBRMZ cards from cap1. the account openi date was retained and showing on the report.

well, last night i checked my reports and guess what?...the TL has been reported and the account open date?...02/2014! i called customer service today and asked if the info on my reports could be corrected. per csr, it is reporting correctly because the visa version is differenct from store card. they will not be changing info on credit reports. i am so bummed because this morning i got a SW alert and my score took another 8 point dip. along with the alert, it indicated the reporting of the visa version and the closing of the store version. if i would've known this was going to happen, i would've just stuck to the store card version! i really didn't need the visa version! this just want to make me pull my eyebrows out!!

question for people that went went from store card to visa card: when the visa card reported on your cr's, did it report with the original account (store card) opening date, or was the open date as the upgrade acceptance?

I have always read that it is a new product, so a new trade line is reported, I know for a fact that the wal mart-discover reports a new one. I think it's prety standard due to the numbers on the card. Different cards start with specific numbers, so change of numbers=new account.

Sorry for what you were told about the account, I don't have any of these myself,

from what I have read on the forum is that most all upgrades such as walmart

store card to discover version results in the same thing happening with the GE funded

accounts.

Yep they did the same thing to me on my wal mart card. I called and had them close that account without using it and had them remove it from me credit report cause i was told the same thing that it would show up as the same account and as well i noticed the different card number ounce it cam in mail and knew i was screw.

I called right then before the card even got reported to credt agency and had them close it.

They still had my store card open too so i left it as is.

almost but not really surprised that GE reps didn't know something... but this is 1 thing that GE is clear on (or at least clear here on the boards) GE upgrades are NEW ACCOUNTS... it's the one really big down side to the upgrade!

Correct. The CSRs will tell you it's a transferred TL, no new TL but I have personally found this to be false.

Sorry this happened to you. You are not the first to report something like this happening unfortunately.

I upgraded Macys store to Macys Amex, and my store card limit and date was retained plus a new account and date for the Amex portion (to use outside of Macys) reported as others have reported.. As far as the GE branded Walmart card(s), the store card is closed with upgrade to Walmart Discover plus a new open date is reported. This is why I decided not to go for the Walmart upgrade plus I really don't need it.

As already pointed out GE upgrades from store cards to major bankcards will without question result in a new TL being opened and the old one closed out.

yeah i should've searched the boards first (like i usually do when it comes to cc's) about this. i just got caught up in the offer to upgrade moment and from thinking that it will be like cap1 best buy cards to citi best buy where the open date was retained. i should've known the simple fact that 99% of the time, csr's will give false information. as always, lesson learned, right?

my only silver lining is the cli from store card to visa card. when i upgraded, instant cli from $1.4k to $2.5k.

that was a great CLI congrats, some even get a lower cl than what store card was at. You can now use it anywhere or keep it as an emergency card? Most GE store cardholders await for the offer to pop up but just seems to never come up so it at least you got it. Enjoy!

My Discover Upgrade was a new line as well despite being told everything transfers, including history.

The documents stae its a new account and the old one will be closed though.

I think the wording in the scripts the CSRs are using is confusing, stating everything transfers over. Which is true. It does. Promos and all.

Its just the history of the old account doesn't tansfer.

I don't think the CSRs are intentionally misleading, rather confused themselves in the way its worded on thier end perhaps.
