NFCU opening to Dept of Defense!!!!

Just got off the phone with csr who said that as of May 22 NFCU will be open to all branches of Military. This is great news for me since everyone in my family who is active are in the army and airforce.

I cant wait either cause I was In Army and my Dad is retired also... but I havent seen the date when it takes effect.

the csr said the last update she received said that it goes into effect on May 22. Call and ask if you need more clarification.

yea and this is for navy federal credit union? my husband is in army full time i would love to get in w/them i've seen how everyone loves..them..keep us updated or posted?

scratch that i dont think my husband works for dept of defense it's classified differently..i tried to look on website to see if it shows anything but it doesnt..

If he is Army, he is eligible.

Any idea if it's active duty only? Or included retired? Or to really stretch it to my situation, former dependent of deceased retired Army? (doesn't seem terribly likely...)

I suppose it's actually possible to go through DH, whose father was in the Navy and died on active duty in 1949. Boy, that would take some legwork!

Didn't you say you did some work for VA? Do they perhaps qualify as a DON contractor?

I perused the list and found out I was eligible from my last place of employment without having to have my dad join so I could join.

Working for the VA doesn't make you eligible for anything other than ulcers and a nervous breakdown, and a general sour outlook on life. (It's not the veterans, it's the bureaucracy.) We don't even have long-term disability offered. We're just another Federal agency, so we're not contractors.

I'd love to see someone take us under their wing!

I'm sorry to hear this...I hope this doesn't cause their excellent service to decline. I'd like NFCU to keep their membership limited to the Navy and USMC.

really? don't you have faith in the leadership that brought the organization to be as good as it is?

i'm sure as a member/owner you could have some input, or even vote with your feet and pull products/deposits from them.

i say let the open up, more of a good thing. think about it, there will always only be so many members and i think they are looking at all the membership other cu's are picking up and are looking towards the future.

my dad is ex-army and i'm current civlian gs-12, i also have 5 kids, so at some point i'll have an in (one or more is joining the navy (i have one who has seal written all over him)).

Wow I have seen it all now. I understand the inter service rivally; hell I cheer as loud as anyone at the Army Navy games but that is just sad. I guess those Army & Marine boys bleeding the ground in Iraq haven't done enough to join the ranks of the elite who are allowed to participate in NFCU.

LOL, your post is a joke right? The USMC is part of the Dept of the Navy and can gain membership at NFCU. Anyway, has nothing to do with who's bleeding where. It's a great organization that has served the Navy and USMC for years. I'm afraid NFCU's service will decline as they get larger like most large banks end up sucking the larger they get. NFCU is already the largest Credit Union in the world, adding this many more eligible members is going to affect those of us that currently enjoy membership in the Credit Union that services the Navy and USMC. It's called 'Navy' Federal Credit Union for a reason. Being in the Navy I wouldn't expect membership in the credit union that services your employer. I just don't want it becoming so large it's like banking at BofA or one of the other large banks.
