The Journey is a student card from what I gather. In my experience student cards come with low limits. Rather than taking the 3 HPs for opening a new account with capital one why dont you just PC the Platinum card to the no AF quicksilver? Before you PC request a CLI on the website, because once you PC you wont be able to press the luv button without getting an automatic denial (6 month required waiting period).

Cap1 Journey vs Quicksilver?

I've had my Capital One Platinum card for about 6-7 years. It's still a no-comma CL (sub-$1k), last CLI 5+ years ago, but it does have 1.25% cash back, and its APR is not the worst I have.

In the last week or so I've received a pre-approved Quicksilver (1.5% CB, 0% through December, 22.9 after) and a "reserved" Journey offer (1.25% CB if I pay on time, 0% to December, 22.9 after, credit score access). They both mention CLI after 5 months of on-time payments.

Is there any reason to prefer one over the other, aside from the 0.25% difference in cash back (which is neglicible assuming a no-comma CL)? Am I better off going for a CLI on the Platinum?

Thanks ftomasze. That makes sense (although getting a student card decades after leaving college... doesn't).

I'm waiting for two TLs to post PIFs later this week, then I'll try the CLI and PC.

Guess we'll see how that goes.

Pondering whether to try EO, sock drawer, or just close it if they don't do anything. Card is coming up on 8 years old, but that's my AAoA more or less, so no big loss, and there's no comma in the CLI.

I did an online chat and they upgraded me to Quicksilver, only change is cash back went from 1.25% to 1.50%. No promo APR or change in terms other than rewards.

I already had no AF, and with a no-comma CL the 0% intro APR until 2015 isn't as useful as it might have been with a comma.

So now either 2-3 days online or 10 days for a letter to see if they turn down the CLI request.

I was turned down for a SP CLI via their website and chat after I PC'd my old platinum to QS. So, I got in touch with EO and they gave me a $1250 CLI. I still closed their card though.

Good to know. I have an email for Richard Fairbank that I believe is a good place to start, after I get some update on the request.

I did read in their CLI FAQ that they tend to prefer people with "history of repaying a large proportion of their balance each month" whereas I've tended to run the card at 80% for a few months and then pay it back down.

I'd be happy with a $1250 CLI, it'd almost make up for BofA chasing the balance on me earlier this month. I'll update when I hear anything.
