I am considering either the Sapphire or the ritz carlton. Which one should I go for and why?

Well, that all really depends on certain details of your spending. Does your spending justify the $395 AF for Ritz? I guess another question is, do you stay at the Ritz?

Both cards have an AF and I prefer the CSP mainly for the travel perks. The Ritz card is supposed to be an amazing feeling card but that to me is not worth the AF.

Assuming that you are talking about the Sapphire Preferred. If you stay at Marriott's and / or Ritz's a lot, or can use the airline credit and other benefits, the Ritz is great. Otherwise I would go CSP. Depends on your spending too. General spend on the Ritz card is a crummy value IMO.

The Ritz card is a niche product (by design), and it best fits people in the following categories:

1. Those who frequent the Ritz (specifically enough to use the 3x annual club level upgrade certs)

2. Those who stay at Marriotts frequently, but not enough to achieve gold status (<50 nights)

3. Those who have combined spending between the two of ~10k.

The $200 airline credit is quite useful, and Lounge Club is alright (although if you're a frequent flier odds are you have lounge access via some other mechanism already).

If you don't fit the above catregories, the CSP would likely be a better option. Overall it appeals to a much wider audience.

This pretty much sums it up very succintly. Also, in my view, it's one of the best looking quality metal cards out there, if that matters to you.

OP, two totally different type of cards.

Ritz - Perk card. Just spend $10K to get the Gold Status. Otherwise it's full of perks and there is no need to put spend on it.

CSP - Spend card. Pretty much zero perks. Spend a lot to earn points.

You're going about it backwards. You need to tell us your needs/wants and then we can tell you which is better suited to you. Selecting a card is always a subjective matter. Which Sapphire are you looking at? Why did you narrow it down to these two? Give us as much info as possible to work with.

One trend that I'm noticing is that more people are interested in the Ritz simply because its another metal card, yet it's one step up from the CSP. They don't really fit the profile of someone who would really benefit, but they just want to feel like they're a baller.

Oh well, when they finally accumulated 10000 UR or Ritz points over 10 years, they'll be grown up and realize how much AFs they've wasted over the years and got nothing in return. Live n' learn...

Whats funny is I have found the metal card to be more of an annoyance than "cool" When I got my CSP in the mail I thought "Oh metal neat". First issue I ran in to is once I put it in the wallet. The Key card to my car (which was also in my wallet) would no longer work properly. IM guessing the metal card blocked signal from the card to the car so it wouldnt start the vehicle.

Other than being a cool metal card, I don't really see any HUGE benefits over just the regular Sapphire besides the foreign transaction fee. The dividend won't pay for itself until you spend $135k or so. Unless there's something else I'm missing...

Partner transfers. Double points for travel. 20% discount when spending points on travel redemption. The 7% dividend. These things add up quickly to offset the $95 AF.
