Alot of my friends who don't frequent this forum carry Freedom and Quicksilver...that should be telling on universally agreed-to-be-good cards.

25% of the money spent using credit cards is spent using American Express cards.

US Bancorp division Elan provides credit cards for over 1700 banks and credit unions. Usually at least 2 cards per company, so thats probably at least 3400 credit cards, and thats not including the cards offered by another US Bancorp division: US Bank, which is supposedly the largest Regional bank.

Or perhaps this is what you are looking for: http://www.americanbanker.com/tools/Cards.html

The question is rather pointless. If you think the most popular cards are the best, well, most people don't understand credit card rewards or what all is available, so the choice of the Herd in this case is meaningless. Conversely, if you want to know what is most popular in order to Avoid the commonplace, that also is meaningless.

NFCU? PenFed? Popularity fluctuations for them as well. Guess it's all about what folks are talking about, how successful a company is in marketing themselves.

What's interesting about "popularity" is that the most popular item doesn't necessarily come from the most popular brand.

Case in point -- for a goodly number of years the Honda Civic was the best selling car in Amerca. But the Honda BRAND at that time was only #4 or #5 in total sales. The Ford F150 truck is the most popular vehicle sold in America, but the Ford BRAND is #3 in total sales, behind GM and Toyota, who keep changing places.

My guess is this holds true for credit cards. A popular card may not come from the best selling BRAND.

Couple of things to add to the thread:

1. Samuel L Jackson didn't "replace" Alec Baldwin. Jackson, in a sense, replaced Fallon because the green Cash Rewards card was replaced by the Quicksilver. The Venture card's ads have definitely slowed down though. No more Alec it seems...due to his negative air about him. I still see a Venture commercial every now and then...just not with Baldwin. I saw one with Charles Barkely and someone else the other day.

2. What the OP might have meant by the question that never seems to get answered is the matter of which is the most issued card. As others have said, it's not an easy question to answer. It probably changes all the time. I am sure the Quicksilver has been helping CapOne ramp up its card count. Is it #1? I doubt it...but who knows. Freedom or Discover It (or previous versions) are a likely candidate but my best guess is that it might be an unassuming, no frills, non-rewards card by a large card issuer. A simple CapOne card with a lower rate or easy terms? Maybe. Chase Slate or Citi Simplicity? A simple BankAmericard? Maybe. Why? Well, I try not to project my interests onto the population at large. I like rewards cards but I try not to assume that that is what everyone is getting. I know most people actually balances on their cards so I assume it's just a low interest card or something like that.

Alot of my friends who don't frequent this forum carry Freedom and Quicksilver...that should be telling on universally agreed-to-be-good cards.
