BoA Accelerated Rewards AMEX

I know there was talk on here before about upgrading the "Worldpoints AMEX" to the "Accelerated Rewards" but I can't seem to find it now. Been having problems with the site today so the search wouldn't even come up for me.

Either way.....I just called BoA and asked for them to upgrade my current AMEX to the Accelerated Rewards one. She explained to me that can not just upgrade it, that they are two seperate types of cards. She did tell me I did qualify for it and would give it me that card also. That would leave both AMEX accounts open. Problem is my income would not allow for more of a CL so I would have to split the $10,000 to 5k each. I am fine with that. She said it should be at my house within 5 days (guess it is sent from Phoenix and I live there too).

So now I have:

Visa Americard $10,000 CL (less then a month old)

AMEX Accelerated Rewards $5000 CL (brand new)

AMEX Worldpoints $5,000 CL (less then a month old)

Worldpoints Visa $2,500 CL (opened 09/06)

Too bad I am not a highly paid lawyer and my CLs could be outrageous. She kept telling me if I had anything else to disclose for income that she could increase my CLs. LOL kind of like she was pushing me to lie. I didn't want to do that.

All started with a $99/$300 secured card with BoA US Airways Visa back in 09/06. Smartest thing I ever did. In fact today I changed my US Airways to Worldpoints Visa. That way I save the AF. That was the only card I could transfer it over too. Maybe I can get it changed to a MC so I could have one of each with BoA.

Sorry forgot to add......no INQ at all for the card, not soft or hard. They used my old CR.

Super Congrats nicemann!!!!

Smart move on your part.

You split the 10k limit between 2 cards, but you have a new

tradeline that will grow over time. Plus, it's another AMEX

and they treat their customers very well.

It's hard to believe that all of this started from the 99/300,

but your hard work is further testimony to what's possible

when people do the right thing.

Thank you....now I think it's really time to stop apping and let my accounts mature.

That gives me four CCs with BoA. Chase CC, JCP, Wal-Mart, Target, BB MC, and Orchard. Then of course I now have my new mortgage.

That's ok I have nothing but positive to say about BoA. From day one they have been so helpful. They even sound like they appreciate my business when I am on the phone with them. I know it's part of their job, but most places don't even try to act. Just like this time I called about this card. The lady was so hopeful. Even tried to get me more of a CL without me asking (didn't happen because of my salary is only 74k) but she tried. Even talked to a supervisor. No other bank has ever treated me like that. I am mad at myself for not getting my mortgage went them now. I went with my realtor's friend who got me the loan so I guess I should be happy. I already have my checking and savings with them.

I wonder if they would hire me to be the BoA spokesman for people trying to rebuild their credit.

Oh, I agree. I wasn't saying anything bad about the bank or the card. I have that card myself, although my attempted product change to the Accelerated Rewards version didn't go so well. They were a little wishy-washy about the whole thing, and in the end they ended up denying the product change even after a credit analyst had told me it was a done deal and I could expect my new card in the mail.

See according to the Rep I talked to you can not upgrade. It is a different product. That is why she did not move my old AMEX to this one. She just gave me an additional card. If you have a BoA CC call their backdoor number and explain to them you would like it. They gave it to me without repulling my CR. Worked out great for me.

HTSU & nicemann, I and a few others HAVE converted (upgraded) to Accelerated from our regular BofA World Points AmExes, but near as I can tell, one can apply for it straight out as well.

I was really surprised to read about nicemann's experience with asking for an upgrade, being told he couldn't do so and ending up with an additional card, and also surprised by cheddar's experience with being approved over the phone for the upgrade only to later learn they'd revoked that decision - I think I'd had my regular AmEx an even shorter time than he had, when I successfully converted (cheddar, if you're reading this, I'd say call again to try to recon that - something doesn't seem right, there! ).

However, it's sometimes tough to find the Accelerated AmEx on the website, unless it's on the 'Featured Cards' spot or list (which it is at the moment) - it's not listed on the 'View All Credit Cards' page, for example.

Right now, they seem to be pushing it - so much so that they've run out of the black card stock, so many people have applied for it! CS says that's a temporary card, so I need to keep an eye on my mail and this account for a few more weeks until my permanent black card arrives.

Humm that's weird. Oh well, I am happy with the extra TL. Almost all of my accounts on my CR are new so it won't effect me average age. None of my cards with them have an AF. Hopefully I get the black card, I like the way it looks.

Thanks, scapegrace, I have considered trying again, but I finally decided to give it six months or so to cool off. I've asked them for an awful lot lately, and they've (mostly) come through in spades. I need to cool my jets for a little bit before I push them too hard.

I wonder if they allowed upgrades when the product was brand spanking new, and once they had issued X number of them, they dropped back to requiring a separate app? Sometimes card companies go on feeding frenzies, and then a couple of weeks or months later, they seem to slam the door shut again.

Oh well, I won't do anything until I pay off my BT BofA card, so I'll have time to read everyone's loves/ hates on the card!

HTSU, I found myself wondering if it had anything to do with having/not having checking and savings accounts with them...? The Accelerated card is (or seemed to be when I upgraded - not so much anymore, in the ads on their site) geared more toward customers who have BofA checking and/or savings accts., as one gets a 25% bonus on top of the 1.25 pt/dollar, if one has those kinds of accts. with BofA along with the cc, making it a 1.5 pt/dollar earner. When I upgraded, they really made a big deal out of the added benefit available to customers who had a banking relationship with them.

I don't think cheddar has checking/savings accts. with them, and nicemann didn't mention having them - no go on the upgrade, for them (though cheddar's given reason for revocation was how short a time he'd had the card, if I recall correctly). I think PurpleHaze has one or both there; I do, and we both got the upgrade, no probs. Any chance they're more persnickety about upgrades with non-banking holders of their cc's, preferring to make cc-only customers get an additional card instead of converting, for some reason?

Or am I just WAAAAY overthinking this?!

Clearly I AM waaay overthinking things like this and need to find a hobby other than being glued to these boards!

Edited to add: BTW, I think I posted somewhere on a related thread a while back that BofA won't charge for payment made over the phone via one of their associates if the pay-from account is a BofA checking acct. (this is what I was told 10 days ago by a BofA CSR taking my payment for my other BofA cc that I can't pay via transfers, yet, and I wasn't charged a fee for that payment). Found out just now, paying another charge I did earlier today, that that CSR was wrong - pay by phone using one of their associates and you'll get nailed with a $15.00 service fee, regardless of the account used to pay.

The automated pay-by-phone system is free.

Interesting theory, though, scapegrace. You're right that I don't have any other types of accounts with BofA, so perhaps that did play a role in their decision. Just a few days after I got the regular Rewards Amex, I checked the preapproval site and saw the Accelerated Rewards Amex listed there, which is what prompted me to ask for the product change in the first place. I figured it would count for something that I had the offer, and I mentioned that several times with the various people I spoke to about the product change.

It did burn me a little bit that the credit analyst at the time told me it was all set, and then I found out later (virtually by accident) that the decision had been reversed. As I said, though, I'll try again in six months or so.

In the meantime, I'm not even going to think about how many WorldPoints all those extra quarter points would have added up to in the meantime.
