OK - I had to go back and check my statements and CRs - because something just occured to me this morning.

Sept 2011 Received Discover with BK showing - $1500 CL

April 2012- I called to inquire about a CLI - I spoke to a rather rude woman who told me that my account could never get a CLI so long as a BK was showing. I took an HP

May 2012 I called Discover to complain that they were constantly sending me BT offers - but I really did not have enough of a CL to take advantage of it - I also mentioned my last conversation. The guy I spoke to - was bothered by my exp. with the last rep - and said he would work with me as much as he could - ANOTHER HP - and discussion about baddies but a $2000 increase - I made a BT.

Jan 2013 - I called again with a $1,500 > balance and said that I wanted to do a BT of nearly $3,000 - I was told another HP - They gave me another $1500 - so now my credit line was $5000. I had about 8 months of 0% financing - so I paid off the account over time - although I was paying some inerest on the original balance for a few months. I wanted to see if demonstrating that I could pay $400 or so a month over a long period would impact my chances of getting a CLI at the end of the year.

Dec 2013 - Paid off card - and then called to ask for a CLI. - This was the first time they did not say - we will have to pull your report - When I was asked - what limit I wanted - I went with what was my highest CL at the time - so I said $8500. It was instantly approved - but I got the impression I could have gotten more. So the next day I called back - and asked for a higher limit. I was told someone would call me within 24 hours - but within an hour - I was bumped up another $3500 taking it to $12000 and making it my highest CL at the time.

Now here is the weird thing -

I do not have any HPs on my credit reports for any of those increases. It is possible that the first one fell off - but I really do not remember ever seeing it. Even if the one in April fell off - There should be ones for May 2012 and then Jan 2013 -

These are the things that work for me with Discover -

1. Letting them know I will use their BTs

2. After Jan 2013 - I had a definitive plan and made sure I did not ask for a CLI until the end of the year - a. I wanted to prove my worthiness over time b. banks are clamoring for customer business in Dec -

3. Carrying a balance at time - but demonstrating that I can make multiple payments in a month

4. Having a couple of months where I put $2-3000 on it and paying about 75% of the balance

5. Stopped this requesting CLI every 6 months business and using the CLIs I did get

6. Lelt them know that I know how utilization works and I wanted to make sure that it did not appear as if I needed to max or nearly max my cards - They seem to like this rationale for requesting increases - especially in the beginning.

Had the card for 6 months , paid perfect never carried a balance one time . Started with a paltry $500 CL , have pushed $3k through the card in the six months I've had it .

They put me on the phone with a credit anylyst and the reason for denial was that I had used it for cash advances a few times (of course I paid them as soon as it showed up on my account ) . Considering what they charge to do cash advances you would think they would love for you to do them especially when you pay them back instantly . Apperantly it throws up red flags to them , so in the sock drawer it goes !

Credit card Cash advance is not suggested. For many reasons... There not making $$ on transactions on purchases if your using cash etc..

Maxing out the card (even if it's PIF) and getting a few cash advances in the first 6 months of ownership is a red flag. Your low starting CL suggests a limited history or a credit profile with derogs and maybe defaults. They gave you $500 to see how well you managed the card and how responsible you were, also to see what potential risk. In 6 months if you topped out the card and used cash advances, you showed you were a risk and not very responsible (in their eyes). For the next 6 months, run up to 20% utilization each month and pay the balance. Don' t do any cash advances. If you do this, I guarantee your chances of a CLI will be better.

My experience with Discover has been similar. But I've been with them since 1999 and still get treated like dirt by them. And my credit is actually very good. I put an occassional charge on it to keep it alive just because it's so old. Otherwise I have no affinity for Discover whatsoever.

SD them and forget them. I would also be writing a letter to the CEO telling them how outrageous their operations are.

The Credit Limit period. In my case, like some others, not everyone of course, while Discover keeps dragging it's feet and spewing out denial after denial for even a little CLI without a precious HP, even my so-called subbrand store cards have accelerated their CLI's far in advance of what Discover's limit is stalled out at. So it's turned into the perfect SD card now.

It's important to keep in mind that the entire purpose of the credit card cash advance was to facilitate a purchase in the rare places, or circumstance, when a credit card can't be used. I would not make a usual practice of taking out cash advances. If for no other reason...the considerable cost. Interest begins to accure immediately and a fee is always charged.

1. It is not very easy to get CLI with Discover for the first year

2. If you DO get one - it is likely to be a HP until you have proven yourself with them

3. It is not a good idea with such a low limit to take cash advances - It looks as if you are short on money - and a credit risk

4. For the first two years - my CLI were HPs and I think I got them only because I told them I wanted to put some balance transfers on the card - I always made sure it was at a time when they sent me a BT offer

5. Discover is a great bank and the card WILL grow with you once you figure out what they like - BTs and paying multiple times a month worked for me -

6. I started in Fall 2011 with a $1500 CLI - two HPs to get to $5000 by 2013 - SP CLI of $7000 last December - after paying off about $4500 BT over 6 or 8 months

7. Continue working your credit with them - come the end of November - ask for a CLI again - I find that a lot of banks are a bit generous around that time - and you know why

Instead of cash advances, Discover is the rare credit card that allows you to do cash-over on purchases much like a debit card, without raping you on the fees. As long as you PIF you won't pay a dime for the privilege. Discover can still tell the difference between the cash and the purchase, and it's limited to $120/day, but perhaps they will look upon it more favorably than a no-kidding cash advance.

https://www.discover.com/credit-cards/member-benefits/cash-over-purchases.html

I have been using it for years with no adverse action. They still auto-CLI me every 6 months; since 2010 I've climbed from $3000 to $9600 limit.

OP sorry they denied you. Was it a hard pull? I learned my lesson from taking one cash advance on a Chase card and all of the fees. After that happened I made it a point to have each lender set my cash advance limit to $0. Fees aside, it is rather crappy of them to deny any CLI based only on cash advances - particularly if you've done so very sparingly and pif.

I know Discover is a member favorite but nothing about my "it" card really stands out especially when there's Sallie Mae and Ebates out there.

I waited about 15 months before my first increase (auto cli). From months 6 - 14 i was denied using the luv button and calling in (they wanted a hard pull) multiple times. changingmantra2 pretty much sums it up and since they denied your cli at 6 months if you don't get one by next month you most likely wont get anywhere until a year or more. There are those who get soft CLIs around the 6 month mark and I was one of those who didn't until 12+ months. My limit has grown a good amount since then and within a short period. I did sd the card one time, but found myself using shopdiscover too often.
