AMEX Delta Benefits Question

To those who have this card, I am just curious how the baggage fee and priority boarding work with this card. Are those perks available from just having the card, or does the ticket have to be purchased with the card? In other words, if I book travel using my skymiles, will I still get the free checked bag and priority boarding?

Ticket does have to be purchased with the card to get priority bording and credit for bags.

if you already purchased your tickets all you need to do is put your frequent flyer number down on your Amex Delta application. If you get accepted they will put this skymiles number on your amex card and you will be good to go for your flights. From what I can tell you don't even need to have the card with you on the date of your flight.

I did provide my Skymiles number at the time of application, so it actually seems like I am good for my upcoming trips. I did see where some other co-branded airline cards required the trip to be purchased with the card to recieve the perks.

All you need is your SkyMiles Number.

You don't even need an AMEX Delta Credit Card for Priority boarding or to get the first bag checked-in for free.

You don't even need an AMEX Delta Credit Card for Priority boarding or to get the first bag checked-in for free.

I have been a SkyMiles member a long time. From what I recall, I think you have to be Silver to get the free baggage, and then Gold to board in Zone 1.

Negative. Tickets DON'T have to be purchased with the Delta card. As long as you have the card on you and it's connected to your skymiles number, you'll be fine. Still let them know that you're a Gold Delta card holder at the beginning to avoid any confusing.

+1 Same with United.

+1 Same with Citi/AAdvantage. I got the card between buying tickets through work's travel service and flying... they updated my account and reservation and I got priority/free bag. It's been transparent since then.

Pondering the Delta card since I'm looking to be traveling 25% delta/75% american and I hate being late to board and paying $50 round trip for a checked bag. Kinda spoiled by Southwest.

I know this is an old thread, but I also know I search for things before posting, and maybe this will help others out.

You don't need it booked in the amex card to get free bags. My major annoyance is that even if you book your flight from delta, if the first leg of the flight is on a partner, they will change you for baggage. Ie. portland, or to seattle is Alaska then delta to Detroit you will pay Alaska baggage fees. If you are flying to a lot of smaller airports this may happen frequently. It happens a lot when I fly from oregon to Maine to visit family.

I hope you don't board Alaska at either end then! Unfortunately the Alaska Visa wouldn't help with bags. But the annual companion certicate for either airline can come in handy given your travel habits. As for purchase points, paying for the fare with an unrelated card means missing out on the double or triple, perhaps not the most significant aspect though.
