topic Amex CLI woes! in Credit Cards

I have been a customer with AMEX since 2006 and I have never asked for a CLI. Last month was the 1st time I upgraded my card from Gold to Platinum. I am trying to work on my utilization rate as they all have pretty low limits. I requested a CLI increase and it was rejected by AMEX. However, when I logged into my BOA to request a credit increase i noticed that they gave me an automatic CLI (coincidence). I called back AMEX and unfortunately got the same script from the same person who did not seem to want to help me until I told her I would transfer my balance to my BOA and cancel the card if I could not get some sort of an increase after being with them longer than BOA. She finally offered to submit my request for reconsideration. Has anyone had any luck with receiving a CLI after a reconsideration?

It's not a matter of entitlement. I just think that after being with them for 8 years (obtained in college) that I should at least be given a chance as with BOA. My main goal is to reduce my utilization on the cards to 50% to qualify for a home ownership progam and a little increase would help as I would have to spend less of my cash on reducing the balance. This is my lowest limit card so that's why maybe I don't see the problem with a small increase. If I was someone always opening and closing cards I would understand but since 2006 I had not opened another credit card until Dec last year. I don't consider myself high risk and I am about to pay off my cards by next month. I guess I will update my signitures then

OK, that makes sense. It's just that when you say "Amex Platinum" the normal assumption is you are referring the American Express Platinum, which is the charge card with $450 annual fee.

You can try to call the Discover phone line for a CLI -- if they need more info you can hang up if you wish to only have a CLI via SP. (No guarantee of this, but it's a good way to see.) If you want to go the brute force approach, simply ask for a CLI from BoA to 10k via HP and they will either counter, grant or deny your CLI.

I would focus on paying down the debt, but if that's not an option then the only way to reduce utilization is to go on the offensive and apply for more credit: meaning new TLs or hard pull initiated credit limit increases. I will say though, if you are maxed, lenders do not like that at all and will have no incentive to extend more to you.

Loyalty only matters so much. They will be loyal to you by extending you a line of credit..only to the point where they don't think you will default on it. It's up to you to show them that you are trustworthy, value your relationship, and will pay your bills.

Hope this is somewhat helpful.

@trinigal30 wrote:

They did give you a chance...a credit card. I understand that you want lower utilization, but it's not on the CCC to provide that when you want/need it. If you want to qualify for home ownership, YOU should lower your util, not depend on a cli to do it for you. They never come through when you most need them.

Your cards are maxed out. That's high risk behavior. CCCs don't know when you're about to reduce your util. You should've waited until after you paid them to request a cli.

Is this an AmEx revolver or the Plat card? Do you have 2 AmEx cards? The Platinum has an internal limit, but is not a card that would eligible for a cli as we think of them.
