Help please

I recently applied for the discover card. I believe it was the "it" card. I got denied and reasons being that my credit cards are close to the limits. Something happened that I've never had happen. When I got the denial letter it also came with an addendum form to apply for the card as a joint account. My mother agreed to apply with me. She has excellent credit. (800s). I'm just wondered if this has happened to anyone and if so what's the chance of approval??? Thanks again!

Discover is known to do this however if you have good credit but just high util. Why not just wait and pay down a bit and then get this on your own?

if the only reason it is denied is because youre almost maxed out on your existing credit cards, I would strongly suggest you lower your util. If not, getting a new card will put you in even more trouble. Good luck..

I agree. Pay down your balances first and then reapply at a later date to get an individual account.

I wasn't asking for advice on if I should get one. I asked if anyone knew chances of getting approval. Yes I agree. I plan to pay them down. But I would like a good card. Thanks again.

we know nothing about your moms credit besides you said it was good... if it is good and she doesn't have high util like you and doesn't have a lot of INQ's then most likely they will approve it by adding her but you can't remove her later so you get a good card but if you carry your habits into this discover card with your other cards your going to take down your moms great credit with high util.

It won't hurt her. And I don't plan on using it except pay in full. She doesn't use credit except just to lay in full. Pays cash for cars etc. Thanks again

I think CreditAddict nailed it, dont get a new card to use as PIF. Instead put that money into your current balances and get the card on your own in a few months. Whats your UTIL and Limits like? If its something that can be paid down in a few months I wouldnt do the joint account.

No need to be rude. Lots of good advice offered relating to your situation. There's no guarantee that you will be approved even with a joint applicant but even if you were, people are advising you that it's not a great card since you will always be tied to the joint applicant. You would be better off waiting until you qualified for the card on your own. the same advice is offered basically anytime someone asks about a joint application with discover here.

Appears CA answered your specific questions.

Yes, they send the form and there is no way of knowing if you'll be approved.

The other responses were in addition to CAs post and the advice was excellent. Asking for opinions will undoubtedly give responses you may not want to hear. Getting your util undef control would be the best option, then applying for your own cc. If your spending habits consists of maxing out your own cc, adding new debt to pay it in full will ame it harder for you to get your existing debt down.

True. I can pay them down. Just haven't done it. My credit is ok. Financed a new car under 1% interest. Yes getting them down would be great. But not doing it yet. Bye

Chance of pulling down joint applicant's score because OP wants run up more debt (but doesn't need to, whatever, who asked you anyway?), high.

I don't like the idea of having a cosigner, because if something goes bad, not saying it will, but things do happen, then you are both hurt by this. It would be another app with your mother on there, she might have a good enough CR to make it a go, but there's no way to know for sure.

I prefer to do it by myself, I don't even add my wife on anything of mine. Ours are completely seperate, except for the mortgage.
