Disputing charges?

First off is it frowned upon to do so and would i be on chases bad graces if i dispute a charge? My brother needed to pay the DMV to renew his licence and he gave me the cash for it and I put it on my new Freedom card. If I dispute it which i will will it look bad? Also how does it work? You pay it and if they find it in your favor they credit you?

Why would you dispute it? It sounds like a valid charge if you gave him permission. Also, when you dispute it they'll ask for any evidence you have that it was an unauthorized transaction. They'll also contact the merchant to find out their side of the story.

Don't dispute things that are accurate.

Ohhh I forgot to say the renew didn't go through but there is a charge for the $80 dollars it costed for it

why didn't it go through? - if the sale was cancelled, i would expect a credit back to the card, if the DMV feels scammed, they will simply cancel the registration - something doesn't sound right

Sometimes it takes a while for a charge to drop off. How long ago did it happen? May be contact Chase and let them know the situation so they can note your account in the event it does not drop off and you need to dispute.

It was something wrong with the website or on maybe on our end that gave an error message but it wasn't completed.

Yes, always start at the source if you were involved in the transaction... Ask the DMV to look into it before getting Chase involved. Good luck.

It is illegal to dispute a charge that you knowingly entered into.

You/he need to follow up with the DMV.

Oh I know that... I was just curious if it had to be done with chase will they be frowning upon me for doing a dispute?

Chase is no different than any other lender regarding the proper steps to file a dispute.

1. As always, try and have the charge in questioned corrected by the merchant.

2. Keep records, names, written documentation as evidence in support of your claim

3. Be able to prove that you tried with the merchant, they failed to correct in a reasonable timeframe and you did not receive the goods/services you were charged.

You really are putting the cart before the horse if you start with the creditor.

As to how they will feel? It's a business transaction, they don't feel; it's either credited back to you or charges will stand.

They won't frown on a legitimate dispute, but they will frown on a frivolous one.

Exhaust all your other options before disputing the charge.

Accounts do get closed for excessive chaergebacks.

I'd highly recommend calling into the DMV before you even consider disputing with the CCC. BTW, has the charge actually posted or is this a pending hold?

So did he still not get the renewal?

After the problem occurred with the website, how did he get and pay for the renewal when he actually got it? If so then he paid twice, you can dispute the one on the credit card and offer the other payment/receipt as part of the evidence. Still might be easier to try the DMV first, but if that proves difficult then yes you can dispute with Chase, they won't hold a legitimate dispute against you. Normally they credit the amount immediately to your account as a courtesy and let you know when the dispoute has been solved. If not solved in your favor then the charge will be reissued to your card.

Some of the info posted is inaccurate. The party responsible for proof depends upon the type of dispute being initiated. For example, a claim of non-receipt requires nothing from you and instead the merchant must prove delivery.

Disputes should be a last resort but you don't have to truly exhaust every single option prior to disputing a charge. Your situation is unclear, but I agree with those that suggested you first contact the DMV for resolution.

My question was more of a pre-emptive thing. I have never done a dispute and was curious to how it works should I need to. It is still in pending. I have since caller and they say it will be credited back but I will see.

This wasn't and issue with the charge but with his license itself

No he hasn't got the renwal yet.
