Dumping US Bank Cash+ and LOC cards

I have been a customer of US Bank for about 25 years and I have always praised their business practices. However, over the last 2-3 months the customer relations department has become more than I can handle or tolerate. For reasons I won't dwell on today, they have not only lied to me once, or twice, but three times and I will not tolerate it. I will not deal with people I can't trust anymore. Come Monday, I will be closing my Cash + card of 20k and my LOC of 15K. I will still have plenty of credit with my Amex and Chase for now. Not sure if I will go after other cards to replace the ones I am closing. It's a shame that US Bank seems to be so poorly run as of late. I hope I can build another good relationship in town with another bank in the coming years. I do not care to just sd the cards, I just want them gone. I don't need to worry about utility since I always PIF. I don't even feel bad about closing 35k of credit lines.

Their online support is non-existent. I once sent a support ticket, never heard anything from them since then.

That's disappointing to hear as I was hoping to app with them come February. Customer service is definitely a priority to me. Sorry to hear you had some bad experiences. Sounds like they lost a valued customer!

Found your thread. Very surprising to hear all of this. Their online banking/management needs some improvements but I haven't had any issues. The Cash+ is my favorite card. Been thinking of how I want to get a second one actually!

I was thinking about getting the Cash Plus, were you dealing with them over the phone or at a branch?

Different people have different priorities. You'd probably have a different point of view if you valued customer service higher than spending rewards.

+1 Right, and these are all individual experiences with individual CSRs (and supervisors etc). I almost never need to contact the CCC so I don't make this a high priority (taking the chance that if things go seriously wrong it can get resolved!).

People tend to pay more attention to individual stories of people you know (even if that "knowing" is merely an anonymous poster on an internet forum) even if that doesn't make too much sense. For the broader picture, look at the most recent JD Powers survey, http://www.jdpower.com/press-releases/2014-us-credit-card-satisfaction-study, where US Bank rates lower than Amex, Chase, Discover and Barclays, but above BoA, Cap One, Wells Fargo and Citi. These larger surveys are better at answering "How likely I am to have a good experience?" than individual posts.

+1 your +1 I actually highly value customer service and I've had to call US Bank more often for information because of features not available or issues with the website but so far they've always been able to help.

Well, this it the downside of data aggregation! But many people here praise Discover for the 5% revolving categories (yes, I know) and for ShopDiscover for example. US Bank has the Cash Plus (and the Flex one) but also has a lot of basic 1% cards. Similarly although many here love Arrival, Sallie Mae and Rewards, maybe other cards bring down the overall rewards score.

So probably for rewards you need to consider the actual card more, but for those companies without tiered service, things like problem resolution score is a useful guide.

Oh, right. Its a customer satisfaction survey. So most companies get their ratings diluted by having a wide range of cards, most of which have average rewards, whereas with Discover you pretty much have the It card.

I don't have reward credit cards from prime banks yet, but I do have discover and their shopDiscover is awesome. For example, I just got an email from rosetta stone for their sale ($219 for a full language program) and shopDiscover is offering 10% cash back on it. I don't know maybe my love for discover will fade when i get better cards, but i would still be happy with their customer service though, I haven't had any bad experience with their customer service yet.

the few times I have called into US bank has been an ok expiriance not on the level of chase or amex but I never expected them to be, I could care less for US Bank and only have a relationship with them via the Cash+, I think its a great card as I have earned almost $500 dollars in about 10 months having the card. that is worth it keeping it, its a no AF card and at $20000 CL, I see no benifit to the OP to close it, just SD it and buy a cup of coffee every few months. all in all, the rewards out do any type customer service, important stuff is not put on this card anyway, that stuff can be put on a amex or chase card.

I think that comes down to consumer awareness. The members here at myFico know the ins and outs of credit cards but the average consumer has probably never heard of Sallie Mae (a myFico favorite) or Cash+. I know I had never heard of Barclays before I started reading here (and I know I can't be the only one!); I've never seen a Barclays card in the wild and I used to work as a cashier in retails (all I ever saw were Chase and Amex cards). Discover has tons of TV commercials (I remember seeing them when I was young too), but I've never seen any sort of advertisement for US Bank (the main ones I see now are Capital One but before moving back to the US a year and a half ago, I didn't know them either).

I guess you don't watch soccer. with all the barclay advertising. or have never heard of the barclay center in new york. Barclays. is one of the biggest in the World. not so big is the U.S

Yeah, for me, it was all those sideline ads talking about Barclaycard - during EPL.

Still, I guess the point is valid: an average Joe on the street doesn't know much about the hidden gem cards; US Bank's "official" "apply at branch" strategy doesn't make it any better for the Cash+ card. Similarly SMMC doesn't get a mention in the average blogger post about best gas / grocery card and Barclay doesn't even showcase the card on their website - how the hell are people going to know about these products unless they frequent MyFico, FlyerTalk, or some of the other guru forums?

Discover, CSP, AMEX on the other hand flood TV channels with their ads. No wonder people are going to notice and then apply for those cards.

Cap One is a different animal. It does spend on its ads. But its CSRs pull it down. Plus, because it deals with a good chunk of borderline customers, some of whom often blame the bank than doing a reality check themselves, its prone to more negative reviews than banks who deal mostly with super-prime customers (like AMEX).
