Wal-Mart just forced me to use chip

Went to swipe my CSP at a Wal-Mart in Georgia and they made me use the EMV Chip instead. The girl said if a card had a chip that it flashes up on her screen and you have to use it. First time for everything I guess.

Same experience with my EveryDay card. Took me a while to figure out how to use the chip and didn't get it until the second time I went to WalMart recently.

It took longer to "process" than a swipe does, and she didn't make me even sign. I'm honestly not sure I get it. If the deal is supposed to be chip+pin and we don't get pins can we even still use it in Europe? Then if not I thought it was supposed to be chip+sig, but she didn't make me sign anything.

99% of EMV card in US is signature priority card. Typical CVM (priority list) of EMV card in US is Signature > No CVM > PIN.

Unless said terminal can only accept PIN, it'll be either signature or nothing. Walmart only requires signature when order is $50.01 or greater.

The only PIN priority card issued in US I'm aware of are Diners Club and UNFCU Visa. For them, Walmart will always ask for PIN.

This really shouldn't be a surprise! If an EMV reader detects a chip on the card, swipe is forbidden, otherwise there would be no additional security (you could just swipe your stolen or cloned card) Although within PIN, stolen will probably be OK to insert anyway!

The benefit of the chip is counterfeit card fraud prevention, if you were allowed to swipe it, there would be no security benefit whatsoever.

Your card is chip and signature (that is to say, the preferred CVM for purchases is signature on the card). Walmart, however, doesn't actually REQUEST a signature for "signature" CVM under $50 - the networks in the US allow this behaviour to speed low-value transactions. This is true for chip or swipe.

Yes, you can use it in Europe - but it's a pain at many shops for various reasons. Chip and PIN would be much more useful. Chip and signature is only marginally more useful than a stripe (e.g. Starbucks in Leiden, NL has their magnetic stripe readers taped over and "NO MAGNETIC STRIPE" signs in Dutch, other places in the Netherlands are similar - THIS VIOLATES VISA AND MASTERCARD RULES). The primary benefit is enhanced security once more places than just Walmart are chip-enabled.

EMV card has been accepted at my local walmart since March.

No, as you said, it never prompted that "card must be inserted". I dont remember what was prompted but it was not "card must be inserted", if I remember right. And thats why tried the 2-3 times.

I can understand swiping a card 2 or 3 times. I can't understand why you would nit pick about doing it other than to cause trouble.

No, as you said, it never prompted that "card must be inserted". I dont remember what was prompted but it was not "card must be inserted", if I remember right. And thats why tried the 2-3 times.

Okay, first - to Lexie - no disrepect was intended - I was curious why it prompted. If he had language difficulties I could see the prompts not being clear, but that obviously WASN'T the case is what I was saying.

Now, as for you - that's bizarre. Here it prompts in BIG text "card must be inserted" - clear and unambiguous. On the cashier side, it's some cryptic message about using ICC. But the customer-facing terminals are super clear. What is the hardware combination you were on (Ingenico or Verifone? Self checkout or attended?)?
