EMV Chip?

I want to get my Freedom and BCE with the chip just because I think it looks cool. I can't really see myself using it, at least not in the near future. My question is this. I once read somewhere that once you get it chipped you can't go back. If I request these cards with EMV chip ill still be able to swipe them like I do now right?

Well, I'm not going to lie - once it's converted you can't swipe once a merchant enables EMV. But that's kinda the point. That's WHY it's much more secure, if you could swipe at EMV-enabled terminals, it'd have no security benefit whatsoever.

You still can swipe

You can still swipe only IF the terminal is not an EMV reader. So most walmarts for example, you will need to insert the card. Hopefully this will quickly spread to more and more retailers.

Ohhhh ok. Hmmm. I'm trying to think of where I've seen an EMV reader but I don't think I ever have. I'm going to start looking out for these things!

A lot of shops have EMV readers but most are programmed with EMV disabled (don't worry swipes will work). Most Walmarts have it enabled as well as small shops using the First Data FD35 pin pad and FD100 terminal. Some Home Depots apparently have it enabled too. Walmart and Home Depot make a lot of sense since they're two very high fraud rate merchants from my understanding, but others need to get their act together. They have the hardware. Now enable it.

Yeah! Ill call this afternoon and see if I can get those cards as EMV! I just hope I use it properly when the time finally comes! Seems simple enough, I'm just not the type of person who enjoys change!

To be honest I think that most cards that have EMV don't look that great I feel the Chip takes away from the look of the front of the card. I think the redesigned Citi prestige the chip is in the back. Not 100% sure but that is how it sounded when I read about it on here.

Yes, I mentioned this a long time ago when people here were first getting chip cards (coming from the UK, they weren't novel to me!) and gushing how great they looked. In most cases, they look like the chip has just added to the existing design, which of course it has. Chip needs to be in a standard place, and no issuer as far as I know has taken the time to adjust the design of the card so that the chip complements it in some way

All the walmarts by men have env enabled so you can not swipe. but i have not seen any other merchants with it enabled yet

Does anyone know if you can Freequest a Chase Freedom Visa with an EMV? I sent a secured message through the online banking portal and they replied with "here are a list of cards that come with an emv" feel free to apply. Freedom, of course was not on there.

+1. Most terminals installed within in the past couple years have EMV readers, but they aren't activated for the most part.

I think it depends on the CC. My Costco TE Amex shipped with an EMV and it's very unobtrusive. I think my BCE would look nice with one, since it'd give it an even more modern look.

Why do people (including banks) keep saying yes to this question? The entire point of EMV is that the answer is no. That's like the whole reason for the switch.
