AMEX keeps doing SP?

I'm curious, I had a Green AMEX in 1995 that I defaulted on. When I started using the AMEX preapproval link, I started getting SP from them about once a month on EX. Sometimes twice.

Of course, any answers would be conjecture I guess, but... could it be that I am actually not blacklisted? I'm afraid to call and ask. Don't wanna poke the bear with a stick.

And also, these SP on EX do not happen concurrently with me checking for an offer.

Thoughts?

It's odd that they keep doing it. No one's gonna know the answer but I did think this pattern was interesting enough to share.

The way I see it, if the are SPing you, and quite frequently at that, I think they have some interest in extending you some credit.

I'm thinking the same thing but until I get Congratulations! instead of "We're sorry we couldn't find a special offer for you. But based on your interests, we think you might like the following Cards" when I look on the check for offers page I don't want to app.

I'll probably wait it out. Really would like that backdated card though... My AAoA is shot from planting all the seeds and rebuilding.

what bad can come of you asking if youre blacklisted? worst they can say is no, and at least then youll have closure and know that AMEX is off limit, rather than playing the guessing game.

Yeah, they did a SP again last night under American Express 2 and then just today as American Express. Wonder what the difference is between the two?

Wish I knew the answer my friend. I would say I'm pretty informed about credit cards, but there is still much much more to learn. I am a noob lol. But self educated though..own research and thanks to this forum. My credit was damaged before and for me, it took the bad to realize the good!

With my experiences, "blacklisting" sometimes applies to the specific product rather than the credit issuer overall. For example, I settled an American Airlines Citicard a few years ago for less than the amount that was owed. I later tried applying again for that specific card and was told Citi had an "adverse" experience with me on that card so for that reason they were declining my application, however since then, I've gotten two Citi-issued store cards. Same thing with Capital One... the first time I had one of their cards, I maxed it out, didn't make any payments on it and after me dodging them forever, it ended up being charged it off but now I have 4 cards with them, all unsecured. So ...i don't know.. you could try applying for a different AMEX card than the one you previously had and see what happens.

The worst thing they can say is "no" ... the best thing they can say is "you get a card". I had a card back in college in 1985 that ended up as a stellar example of irresponsible use of a credit (charge) card. It was a CO for several thousand dollars. This never came up in my current AMEX applications so I don't know if they have a SOL for their so-called blacklist. It would be interesting to know how far back AMEX goes when making you persona non grata. Anyone with a denial due to a baddie with them prior to 1995?

I think I figured out what AMEX is doing. Account Reviews.

Each SP follows within a day or two of a new account being posted, a hard inquiry, or a dispute that resulted in a change on my report.

While it intially looked like it was frequent and at least once a month, I realized that wasn't correct when I looked deeper at the actual dates.

Big Brother. Kinda creepy.

You can always app for it, if ur blacklisted they won't even do a HP they will just upfront denie you.

When you defaulted on your first card with them, did you end up paying the account back in full?? That will also make a difference. Try their preapproval site too. I say just just apply. If approved call them up and ask them to "change your member date to 1995", don't ask to "backdate"

It is very weird they are doing AR's for someone who doesn't have a card. But if they are, it probably means you are not blacklisted. I would probably take the chance and app for one of their easier to obtain cards. If approved, I would be sure to pay in full well before the due date.

There was one entry on my EX report from 10/20/2013 that actually said: AMEX ACCOUNT REVIEW: 03/23/2013 but it's not on newer reports anymore.

Yup. I pretty much only use what I have to match in the bank. I keep my UTIL low... That way if anything happens, I can PIF everything and not worry about defaults. I learned my lesson LONG ago...

Which credit card would be easiest do you think? I'm not interested in the charge cards. I kinda had my eye on the regular BCE. I also have a Costco business account but from what I'm seeing that's harder and it's only on the network anyway.
