Which cards are really chip and pin?

Since most cards in US are chip and signature. Which cards are chip and pin?

-Barclaycard Arrival Plus World Elite MasterCard

-Sam’s Club 5-3-1 card

i can see that all 4 cards from FNBO are chipped.

First of all, there is no chip and PIN or chip and signature only card. Chipped card has an internal list called CVM. CVM tells the card terminal what type of validation it can do and in what order.

Take Arrival+ for example, its CVM list is,

1. Signature

2. Skip CVM

3. Offline PIN

This order means that if the card terminal must do CVM and it can't be signature, then and only then will it ask for a PIN.

The only card that I know of that puts PIN in number 1 on CVM is UNFCU Visa. You can test this card in Walmart, it'll always ask for a PIN.

well if you do travel in europe, some countries require you to have chip & pin, rather than swipe & signature.

Yes, there are places where nothing else will work (some unmanned tollbooths, ticket machines, gas stations etc) and others where it is just much more convenient. In the UK, everyone (outside the touristy areas) is used to chip&pin, so when you insert the card and a signature slip (eventually) appears, it causes confusion and delay, so I use my UK debit chip&pin when in a busy store there, even if it means losing some rewards!

^ Yeah it really does cause a lot of confusion when it's not chip&pin - for anyone who hasn't been overseas it would be akin to needing to have a US merchant bust out one of those old imprint machines.

In truth, your UK debit card simply lists PIN as number 1 on CVM list. It most likely can do signature if card terminal can't accept PIN.

Sure, but that's not the point, just want it to work with PIN in supermarkets.
