Diners Club card is back

So the Diner's club card is now accepting new applications after being closed out to new apps for years. Anyone thinking about jumping on this? It reminds me of my childhood when my father used to carry the DC card. Back then it was an outstanding rewards card until they did away with the restaurant perks. I always wanted one, but I don't think it fits in with my portfolio at the current time.

On the back of my Discover card IT is a Diner's Club logo.

So what's the difference and if my Discover is accepted at a Diner's Club, merchant it seems silly to apply for a separate card.

Not sure of your point. I'm sure the merchants would also accept visa and mastercard. At one point discover bought diner's club international, but north america is now owned by the Bank of Montreal. I believe the new cards are on the mastercard network. Its a completely different program from discover so other than that logo they have nothing in common.

Fees are pretty steep on both cards.. with the lack of good rewards.

Actually if you read your link and looked at the north america section you would see that portion of the business was sold to the Bank of Montreal. What Discover bought was the diner's club international because they wanted to access to the payment network to grow their business. I didn't realize at first that Discover never bought north america either. Citi held on to it and sold it just a little latter which is why Us/Canada Diner's Club cards are MCs.

Its not bad and probably better than Citi, but I'd still rather earn UR, SPG and MR points first. Some reviews say they are slow on the points transfers which can be a problem when trying to redeem reward travel.

There are two types of Diners Club,

* Diners Club NA (North America)

Essentially MasterCard bearing the name Diners Club. Can only be used at places that accept MasterCard. Does not run on Diners Club network at all.

* Diners Club International

This is what Discover bought. Has its own network. Foreign countries based Diners Club are considered Diners Club International.

The real draw is the Elite card with unlimited 3% on grocery stores and supermarkets.

That and AA & AS transferability.

This thing is going to be the next MS craze.

You have to spend a lot in 3x categories to justify a $205 differences in AF.

diners club premier sounds good wit airport lounge access, rental car discounts and all but eh.... 95 annual fee is bit stiff for me.

Actually I still see the DC stickers fairly often, which is suprising. That being said these new North America cards are on the mastercard network (not on the diner's club network) so will be useable everywhere you can use a mastercard which is pretty much everywhere. .

Yea, you need to actually check and see which lounges they have access to. There is a whole list for lounges around the world some of which seem kinda random. For $95 though there can be real value there if it meets your needs.

would've been definitely useful and even could justify annual fee if I had this card last 5 years, since I traveled more than once a year, but.... that time's past

Yes, because its referring to the diner's club payment network.
