Discover iT Closed!!!

Today i closed my Discover iT Credit Card, i got tired of the limited acceptance, Even Walmart dumped Discover for MasterCard, The Discover Card has a long way to go before it can catch up with Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Did i make a big mistake???

They're accepted at over 90% of merchants across the U.S. I've only been denied once and that was at a small mom/pop shop. If you have no use for it, then closing it would obviously benefit you.

Closing a no AF unsecured card is not a good idea IMO. You could have sock-drawered it.

I love mine have not had any issues accept one time at my workplace chick-fil-a there did not accept discover. Love the rewards though

Haven't had problems with acceptance or anything. I find that more places will take them than Amex, especially when it comes to bill pay and all but I hate how stingy they can be with CLs and CLIs.

And depending where you stand with overall CL and utilization, you can equally say "Keeping a card you have no use for isn't a good idea". That's my preference but it really is an issue of personal style, "hoarding" because you never know when a card might be useful or when you might need the extra credit, vs "minimalist" where you keep only the things you know you need.

For this specific card: if I had it (which I have never bothered to do) I would keep it for ShopDiscover, but if the OP doesn't find that useful, closing it makes sense.

Yes up until a couple of months ago there was a Sam's discover and a Walmart discover card, as well as just store cards for both.

I do think discover has a way to go to catch up to visa, mastercard, and amex. They really only offer two cards the it and chrome. The chrome card useless and no one should apply for it just get the fid amex or cities double cash and get 2% anywhere. The it card is solid but it doesn't even come close to the chase freedoom. Freedom is accepted at more places, has the ability to transfer points if u have a csp, also the sign up bonus is better. Do I think u are the right call in closing it? No I don't it's got no fee so it's worth it just to keep open for the 5% back. Now if discover was smart they would up the 1% back on everything else to at least 1.5% to try and beat the freedom

I'm actually running into problems with merchants accepting Amex over Discover -- certain gas stations, a toyota dealer, etc.....

That's your call to make based on your own needs, priorities and preferences. If you have no use for the card and you're not the type to keep every possible tradeline open then myabe you didn't make mistake. If you didn't consider everything that matters to you before closing then you might have made a mistakle. It's too late at this point anyway. Acceptance really hasn't been an issue for me but YMMV. You know where you shop and what cards they accept.

Ive had mines for about 8 months and the only time it has not been accepted was while eating at Pollo Tropical.

Thank You all ......if Discover were smart they would reduce their Merchant Fee and charge exactly the same Fee Visa and MasterCard charges and that way at the end, They would make even more money than they do now because then Merchants Worldwide would have NO problem accepting Discover the same way they do Visa and MasterCard...............The Chase Freedom Visa is what Discover iT wishes it could be ..........Another thing, if you only had a Discover Card in your Wallet and you had NO place to stay, Good luck finding a Hotel that is willing to accept Discover, You would end up Homeless..........Make NO mistake, There is a huge reason why The Biggest Retail Store in the World "Walmart" Dumped Discover for MasterCard like a Hot Potato....

This is all nonsense. There is obviously something else behind closing the card, which is fine.

I beleive Wal-Mart wanted more money and Discover wasn't budging....MasterCard doesn't care, they just want their name on a card

In my area (midwest), Discover is more commonly accepted than AMEX. Most hotels around me also accept Discover. I would have kept it and SD it, but to each their own!

If a hotel won't take AMEX, I won't stay there. AMEX is the easiest at chargebacks for unsatisfactory stays.
