Chase Freedom - places that don't take Amex.
Discover Open Road - 5 percent back on gas.

Chase Platinum Visa: Anything that I can't/won't pay off before the due date: currently 0% interest on purchases until 2/2009

Everything else: Rotates to keep the cards active.

Capital 1 sky miles - purchases from 6th of the month to the 15th of the month (and any purchases that dont acept AMEX)

Amex blue sky - purchases from the 16th of the month to the 5th of the month

3 others get used >$10.00 every 3 months on a rotation to keep active

Cards that I use for daily purchases:

BoA Platinum Plus MC

Chase Flexible Rewards Visa

Cards I use for special big things, like Travel:

Amex Plat and Green Charge Card. (extra rewards points for travel/online shopping through their site + the option to redeem points for travel and shopping through their site)

Cards that I don't really have in my wallet, and use just for small stuff so they stay active:

Cap 1 "Platinum" Visa

1FBUSA "Gold" Visa

HSBC Direct Rewards Discover

Currently FNBO Max Rewards Visa, Citi Driver's Edge Options, and Discover Open Road.

FNBO: backup if they don't take the others
Citi: Everything (6% on gas and groceries during first year, 1% on everything else)
Discover: first $100 of gas per month.

Soon, after the Citi promo expires, I intend to change it up and use:
Penfed for Gas (5%)
Citi Professional for Food (3%)
FIA Fidelity for everything else (1.5%)

I don't have any of those cards yet, but I'm going to join Penfed in a couple of months, before the Citi promo expires, I have a Citi Dividend PS I'm going to try to convert to Professional Cash, and I have a currently closed BoA that I'm going to try to reopen. I'm sure that they'll let me reopen, but I doubt they will let me convert to the Fidelity, and if they don't, I'll use the Penfed 1.25% on everything instead of Fidelity.

1.) Citi Diamond Preferred MC (have LOADS of rewards points from ordering from QVC)

2.) PFCU Platinum for gas. With my car having to use premium, I'm at the pump a couple of times a week!

3). Chase ASPCA Plat Visa (anything that gives to animals, I use)

Once my new Citi card shows up my answer will be:

Citi Platinum Amex for gas, groceries, drugstores (5% in TYP for the first two years)

Citi Platinum Amex for everything else (3% in TYP for the first two years)

Exceptions:

Amex Gold Delta SkyMiles: Cell phone, hardware stores, USPS for double miles (Will spend at least $300 a month on this card for the rest of the year in order to reach annual spending level for 10,000 bonus miles.)

All other cards: One small purchase per month to keep them active.

In my wallet:

PenFed --gas and grocs (5% and 2% cash back, respectively)

Chase Borders --restaurants/ fast food, grocs, Borders (2% and 3% in points; if Borders is bought out by B&N, I want Chase to let me switch to a Freedom Plus)

AmEx Gold --Verizon bill plus whatever else (because I'm trying to look like a grown-up to them)

UTFCU and USAA debit cards --occasionally for printing out cash (because sometimes even I use cash)

everything else in drawer with random recurring monthly charges or for store purchases (to keep them alive)

I have 7 cards but I only carry 1 card at a time in my wallet. Right now, BoA UCLA Alumni MC b/c it's the one with the most reward points accumulated and supposedly they donate to the Alumni Assoc everytime I use it.

That's not doing you any good. I'd say it'll be hard to hit $6500 on gas, drugs and groceries alone. In which case, 1% is the standard rate on most other cashback cards and then you can earn bonus rates on top.
