@HiLine wrote:

I totally understand people's desire to close credit cards they do not use or need. I view this as the same thing as throwing away stuff that you no longer use; at this point anything becomes trash. Having more makes people stressful. The OP has a fine credit history, I'm sure. Closing these cards are not going to do his credit any harm.

After being on this forum for a while, you can get the illusion that everyone has perfect credit or needs or wants to have prefect credit. You can become obssessed with making your credit perfect and helping people get perfect credit. The truth is, this process takes a lot of will power and personal attention; it takes away the time and energy you could spend somewhere else. For the vast majority of people, 3-4 credit cards is all they need and want and feel comfortable managing. Anything beyond this can cause stress.

I really never thought about this until I started my blog and tried to step in my readers' shoes. I have also tried to talk my friends into getting their 2nd credit card, and listening to their reasoning made me realize how uncomfortable it is for most people to step into this credit territory. If managing 2 credit cards sounds that uncomfortable, how would the general population feel about handling 10 or more credit cards?

Most of the time, squeezing a couple of extra points of credit score just isn't worth the effort for most people.

My profile is pretty slim compared to some here (4 bank/cu accounts, auto, boats, household and 9 cards). Each time I added accounts, I get the wave of self satisfaction and gratification, followed of course by the added stress (sometimes even overwhelmed). Right now the phase for me is almost therapeutics and very satisfying... successfully managing accounts has become very simple and healthy. It really takes no time at all these days. I'm early in my journey and can see a time when closing the snail accounts that just won't grow or don't fit into my life anymore will be wanted and I will have no problem shutting them down.

nice post hi-line...

congrats op on cleaning house.

Not normal? WTH? He only closed 2 cards, not 12. Closed accts remain 10 yrs on your report. Analysts don't care about them. Besides it will say Closed By Consumer. No big deal. Some people don't want a gazillion cards to keep up with. Especially if they serve no purpose! Nothing wrong at all with trimming the fat. I will be doing the same next year.

Hey Wac. No shame in doing that. I've done the same thing with several cards I didn't need anymore or with cards that weren't growing or performing that well (like Fingerhut, Wal-Mart, and that Chevron card) and also what Baller said. The account still report either way for up to 10 years, it's utilization that's possibly affected in the short term. Also I always end up getting way better cards anyway so it's not really that big of a deal to me.

Good for you WAC. I am in the close them if you don't need them camp as well. I'm planning on trimming down to 8-10 cards, but am waiting until some of my cards hit one year old before closing (March 2015).

Frankly one of the biggest reasons is I'm tired on toting around this massive wallet with 16 credit card slots! Even though I've got several SDed, it's still a pain carrying around this mini trapper keeper.

Maybe if European man purses become suddenly fashionable (those guys always manage to look cool with those...lol) and I can throw all my cards in the purse. But I don't see those becoming "a la mode" anytime soon (at least not in suburban Minneapolis!!!)

Congrats Wac! I have closed many cards during my credit tenure....everyone's situation is different...those that are "into" scores I have actually had my scores increase when cancelling a card....and there are many reasons to cancel, not just because of those wonderful sign up bonuses, sometimes cards are no longer useful in ones portfolio, Apple finance for instance, no rewards (when I had the "white" card) I obtained it solely for the 0% financing and when paid off got rid of it, I was not going to use it again. Also new cards with different reward structures come out all the time, why would I necessarily keep old ones I am not using when I pick up new ones? Again we all have different wants and needs concerning a specific card, but why do a lot on here get freaky when people close accounts? I can understand explaining to someone the consequences of closing an account, and then it is UP TO THEM to decide what works best for THEM, but some here totally freak when someone does that (not on this thread, but have been around long enough here to see that) to each his or her own, teach but don't preach......UNLESS it is solicited.....and Wac believe me I am so for making things simple, with over 20 cards I HAVE To!! LOL Good luck to you!

Do you also think that the Chase Freedom is still a useful card despite them getting rid of some of the benefits? My Discover card is still stuck at 500 even after 7 months of having it. Ugh.

Makes sense to me. The rebuilding process is also a learning process. We pick up useless cards that we ultimately don't really need in our quest to build credit. I ultimately only want to manage 10 to 12 cards max. So once my reports are clean next year, I will be shuffling some cards in and out my portfolio as well. At that point I can be pickier as to what cards I actually want. We all eventually reach that point in our journey! Do what works for you Wac!

Congrats on closing the accounts. It does make life easier somewhat when it comes to managing them.

I closed 8 store card accounts on Monday night myself because Barclays closed my Apple card due to too many new accounts and inquiries. All of the accounts I closed had a $0 balance. I paid off Barclays and closed the cards to hopefully alleviate more issues with other creditors having a red flag over me because of all of the new activity.

If this afffects my score, I will live it and garden for a while and try to grow the other accounts I do wish to keep.

I don't think a lot of closed accounts on the report are an issue. The only negative is that it might raise questions if they think you are churning for rewards but really the same question can arise if you have a bunch of no-activity open cards

Besides for the sign up bonus I was able to get and all, I really just got that card to get in with Chase just like you got the Amazon Visa. Do you also think that the Chase Freedom is still a useful card despite them getting rid of some of the benefits? My Discover card is still stuck at 500 even after 7 months of having it. Ugh.

Freedom is useful to me for the 5% categories. We take vacation every year and stay at Marriott so I basically use Freedom to earn Marriott points at 5% in rotating categories. My Chase cards in general are really the cream of my crop at this point. I would be just fine with just the 4 of them alone. Especially since getting AARP. I use it the most hands down.
