topic Any data points on F10T utilization "trend" impacting scoring? in Understanding FICO® Scoring

I'm curious if any testing has been done / there are any data points out there on how increasing utilization over time (the "trend" in data) bodes problematic for F10T where it doesn't impact the earlier versions beyond just normal utilization/threshold points. @Thomas_Thumb I figure if anyone has come across data on this, it has probably been you.

What I'm looking for would be a comparison of the same event and its impact on F10T verses F8. The comparison would go something like this:

Someone is at organically reported utilization (pays statement balances in full monthly) and tends to land at aggregate utilization percentages in a range of (say) 15%-25%. I'm picking a range that doesn't cross any utilization threshold points. Their Experian FICO 8 score we'll say is 800 just for the purposes of conversation. While unlikely, we'll say their Experian FICO 10T score is also 800 just for simplification purposes. Since their 15%-25% utilization remains steady over ~24 months, F10T sees no upward "trend" and therefore it doesn't bode problematic for scoring.

Now, let's say this same profile increases utilization to 55%-65% where it stays for a period of months. Perhaps their EX F8 score drops from 800 to 760 with the change. My question is how much more would EX F10T drop when considering that upward "trend?" From my understanding "standard" utilization is still King when it comes to F10T, with the TD simply being supplemental (less impactful). I therefore wouldn't expect a drop to 720, but I really don't know. Maybe 740? I'd like to have the privilige of speculating less and actually seeing some data points on this subject.

If anyone has any data points or insight to share, that would be absolutely fantastic.

I have not seen and robust live data studies on controlled aggregate utilization comparing F8 to F10T score over time. If someone were to do one using monthly 3B reports; F10 should be included in the mix. Meaningful data would require atleast 6 months of monthly scores with aggregate utilization rising a few percentage points monthly (say 3%-6%) - imo.

Example: 3%, 8%, 13%, 18%, 23%, 28% and 33%. Graph monthly F8, F10 and F10T scores by month. Incremental changes in utilization can fluctuate but should trend upward every month.

Right on. That's precisely something I'd like to see. I'd figure a handful of people on this forum that have the paid plan where they get their 40 FICO scores all the time would have done some looking into how F10T tracks relative to other scores like 8. Oh well. Hopefully in time someone comes along and sees this thread that can offer some personal insight/data.

@Zoostation1, what about your utilization trend? I don't see where you mention it. As mentioned in my original post, I'm very curious to see the scoring impact of a utilization trend (or or down, really) on 10T relative to 8.

@Zoostation1

Good info on 10T. Your inclusion of cards reporting balances and their utilization levels is helpful. However, you forgot to include corresponding Fico 8 scores. The stated objective is to compare the 2 models relative to changes in aggregate utilization. Your added data allows for red flagging outlier data points such as a high single card utilization.

I'm interested in how 10 compares to 10T. If you add Fico 8 scores, can you also add Fico 10?

P.S.

I understand you have some derogatories on file. What is the anniversary month of your most recent derog, its age and severity? The score spike in March 2023 is noteworthy. Also your scores appear to have stablized at a higher level over the past 12 months. Maintaining at 7 cards has probably helped stability.

@Zoostation1 thank you for the data. You keep nice records of everything! I think the issue here is that your aggregate utilization for years has remained very low. It seems you only crossed the first aggregate utilization threshold point once really. Your growing TCL has prevented your aggregate utilization from being volatile. The other issue I see in terms of conflating variables is that your scores are naturally increasing over time... of course your aging metrics all improve, your negative items age, etc.

In looking at the F10T vs F8 numbers from say late 2022 verses late 2023 (after aggregate utilization trended up 7-8% give or take) I'm not seeing any notable difference between the "before" and "after" F10T vs F8 scores. Would you agree with that, @Thomas_Thumb? I'd imagine this minimal utilization upward "trend" simply isn't enough to move the needle for F10T.

Some other things that caught my attention as looking deeper into my reports are that the reason code about high balances in relation to credit limts replaced the second one using the ratio of recent to historical balances terminology. Neither code has ever been above 4th in the list but starting in Feb 2025 EQ started having the high balances reason code. TU had the ratio of recent to historical balances until then and now has nothing similar. EX was like TU but lost it a month earlier. EX also has had the too many accounts with balances reason code ever since sep 2024 (3rd month I had 3 more more accounts reporting balances, and has stayed around since).

@BrutalBodyShots

@Zoostation1

Adding new CC accounts along the way certainly influences results. That makes analysis more difficult.

It looks like from Aug 2024 onward cards reporting balances was maintained at 3 of 6 and then 3 of 7 except 1 month was 2 reporting. That neutralizes impact of that factor.

In March 2023 EQ 10T scores spiked up to 720 and remained above 700 thru August before dropping. Note how total balance in $ changes. It took over a year before EQ 10T scores surpassed 700 again. In contrast, F10, shows the spike up in March but not the subsequent decline. F9 and F8 scores did not show the spike up or subsequent drop. Those model scores continued their gradual increase.

The difference in EQ 10T behavior vs EQ 10 is worth a closer look. TU 10T and EX 10T showed some increase/decrease in 2023 as well but, nowhere near as pronounced as EQ.

The 10T and 10 spike up may relate to adding a 4th card while maintaining AZE1 at low total $ balance. The subsequent 10T decline likely relates to an upward trend in aggregate balance (not utilization). Once aggregate balance stablized, 10T scores respond positively after a lag time. Key point is 10T reacts to a rate of change in $ balance, not the balance per se. So stability at a $3k total balance over time is no more risky than stability at a $50 total balance from a trending perspective.

I may plot EQ8, EQ10 and EQ10T scores by month on Y1 axis (scale 670-750) with Ag UT% and/or ratio of total $ balance to a historical average total balance on a Y2 axis. Then do a 2nd plot for TU and a 3rd for EX as a visual analysis. So far I have not worked up the motivation to key in all the data.

Side note:

Trended data often looks at a moving average over time. It looks like ratio of current balance to moving average could be a risk indicator metric.

One trend visual could be plotting ratio of current aggregate balance divided by 6 month average balance. A ratio above 1.0 indicates current balance exceeds historical average. Is that an issue? Probably not unless the ratio crosses some threshold, say 2.0, and remains elevated for more than "X" months.
