You can write a GW explaining your situation (much like you did here). It doesn't have to show loyalty to any particular company. Just be sure to make it personal.

GW for collections?

My husband has one bad thing on his credit report that is keeping his scores from getting close to mine. When he first moved out on his own, he moved in with a friend who is financially irresponsible. When they moved out we paid every bill due except for the amount due to the apartment complex, that was his roommates' responsibility. His roommate refused to pay it (his mom said he didn't have to pay it if they stopped sending him notices). Now my husband has a collections account. It finally got paid almost two years after it was sent to collections, his old roommate's girlfriend convinced him to pay it. I'm wondering if this is a situation where I can write a GW letter to try and get it off his credit report, it was only sent to one CRA. It was an apartment complex so we don't have a continuing relationship with them and all the GW letters I've seen have been emphasizing how long you've been loyal to the company. I really want to get his credit score up, we're applying for our first house in December after we have our full down payment saved up.
