If I were in that situation I would go to your local credit union and sit down for a face to face with a loan representative. Credit unions typically seem to be more understand and lenient to people in situations like these, and will probably go farther to try and help you.

He does NOT use the cards anymore. Can he get a loan to consolidate? How would he go about doing that? He would need a $20,000 loan. Could he possible get another card and put everything on it? One card has 23% apr! The others are 14%-15%. Any suggestions? The minimum monthly payment is killing him. Thanks!

Thank you for your response. I do belong to a credit union because I am a teacher...but he does not belong to one. I was looking at credit unions for him, but the hightest personal loans they have are only for about $9,000.

You might try reposting this in the General Credit forum. I think it could be a little more helpful since this is more of a loan question than a CC question.

I will move this to General Credit; as FM suggested, you might get more response there.

FWIW, the name of the game is to get a lower APR than 14%. If he can get a loan from a CU at an interest rate that is below 14%, it would make sense to get the loan to pay off the CC debt even if he can only get $9k. It's worth a try to get a CU loan although beware they are not always eager to give unsecured loans to pay off credit card debt.

If you will allow me to really stick my nose in here ... even though he is your fiance, don't take out a loan for him. JMHO.
