Oh Noes!!! Parking Ticket???

I got a parking ticket a year or so ago when I was unloading my truck at a trade show. I was pissed that they found me in the three minutes that I was parked there, so I just threw it out the window. Well it just showed up on my TU report as a collection and dropped me over a hundred points!! They obviously have no social, and no credit app. Can they do this? Geez I hate the parking nazis!

Throwing a ticket out the window is not a good idea - yep, they sure can do that. I once got a $65 ticket for parking at an expired meter on a rainy Saturday morning, while I ran into the candy store for 20 seconds to buy a newspaper.

After 60 days I received a notice from DMV that they would begin collection actions, and I'd be unable to renew my vehicle registration if I didn't pay the $85 ticket ( $65 turned into $85).

I don't know what town you're in - but NY is serious about collecting.

They sure can! They've got your License Plate & VIN, which means they've got your life story through the DMV. Pay that sucker, and pay it quick!

Bastages! So I called the city an they said that I would have to take it up with the CA. What a beating. I just disputed it, so hopefully it will drop off, but if not I'll try the PFD route.

forget about the CR, the whole not wanting to go to jail and not wanting my car impounded thing would prompt me to pay my parking tickets.

it never makes sense to me when people don't pay their tickets.

You really shouldn't dispute things that are correct this is why it is so hard for people to get things removed that are not correct. Then we wonder why the CRA doesn't just take our word for it.

I'm doubtful that you can PFD a parking ticket when they can just come and arrest you for not paying or tow your vehicle as another poster stated. At least they will in Texas. Good Luck Vicki

Yeah, I'm sure everyone on this board only disputes incorrect items on their reports. Come on people, it's a parking ticket! They don't arrest you for those!

They don't arrest you, but they sure will tow your car if they find it parked in their town again.

And forget trying to get this off your reports. For one thing, it's accurate information. For another, it's NOT "consumer debt" as defined in the FDCPA. So the collection agency doesn't have to respond to your DV, they can keep on collecting it without validating.

They WILL get their money eventually. You might as well pay them.

i would double check in my city/town whether or not you get arrested for parking tickets. they will most definitely issue a bench warrant in my city if you don't pay.

i know this because several years ago they offered amnesty to anyone with outstanding tickets to come in and pay without having to worry about getting arrested.

not paying a fine is most assuredly NOT legal. parking tickets are not optional, people. if they were, no one would pay them

And beware of winning any "lotteries" or sweepstakes that you KNOW you didn't enter.

About 10 years ago, my county (VA, outside of DC) sent sweepstakes winning notices to about 1000 people with bench warrants (ranged from ticket jumpers, petty crimes, etc) saying that they had won a new TV, boat, etc. All they had to do was come to a local warehouse to receive their prize. Strangely enough, they were all herded into another room and one at a time, booked for outstanding warrants!! My humble county netted about 700 people that way. :/

I know that's been done in several other counties, states, etc ... just thought I'd remind the OP to be careful. Chances are, if it sounds too good to be true, it is. :/

i've heard about those lotteries! nice way for a city to generate revenue.

i used to park on the street where i used to work and i would get caught about 3 times a year for street cleaning tickets. i'd pay the $10 and move on with my life, no muss no fuss.

seems to be the intelligent way to handle a ticket

I wish I lived somewhere that only had $10 parking tickets. Out here, we get them about once a month and dispute them every time. We live in a complex that only allows one parking space per unit. We have two cars. There are also no handicapped parking spaces. DH is now handicapped & tends to trip a lot, the farther he walks. So he parks on the street outside which is closest to our apt. On the first and third Wednesday of each month, you can't park from 7 am - 3 pm for the street sweepers (who have never, ever swept these streets.)... so if he or I don't get out there and move his truck (and, where would we move it to??) then he gets a ticket.

We send the same form letter every time, detailing no handicapped spaces, his falling problem, etc and they get dismissed every time. But at $50 a pop, that would really add up if they weren't so nice. I don't see why they waste the time ticketing him, though...

i don't know where you live, but here you don't have to get a notice in the mail for you to have to pay it. the ticket itself is your notice and you have to go to court to find out your penalty.

Okay, Ivy ... no offense, but why in the *BLEEP* haven't you complained your butt off about the lack of H/parking?????

Hubby blew his knee out and was considered legally (though temporarily, though it was unsure at the time) handicapped and you bet your bippy we screamed a blue fit until we got a H/P space. Oh-you-betcha!!

We casually dropped the "L" word (lawyer) and our complex jumped to the likes of which you wouldn't believe.

I'd call/write to your local congressman, ombudsman, city council ... EVERYONE.

*angry as H-E-double toothpick and off to see about H/C laws and regs!!*

Carrot,

You could call the city back or write them a note saying you will pay in full but they have to call the collection agency off. Explain your situation. Say you were just driving through town and got the ticket and forgot all about it. Say you want to pay but you don't want it ruining your credit report.

And I would never dispute anything that is correct. Sometimes we just have to own up to our mistakes, even the mistake was trying to disregard a barely disguised form of taxation.
