Actually I think the Wachovia is better.... Or someone that is really good with math which would be better, 5% for first year and 2% thereafter or just 2.65 for all 3 years?

assuming the 2.65 does not change for the next 3 years.

the wachovia offer is currently guaranteed by the looks of it.

My philosophy is go with whomever has the highest APY and most importantly is FDIC insured. I signed up with Dollar Savings Bank, which began high and is now down to 2.25%

It's kind of a crappy time, but oh well.

I'm making about $90-95 a month with my alliant account. So if you have enough in the account to where you'd make the capped interest at $300 in a short period of time, you wouldn't benefit to go with the Wachovia account.

Lately it has been hard to find a decent rate at any bank. The rates have been fluctuating quite a bit. UFB Direct currently has a rate of 3.5% which is the best I have seen in quite a while. I would recommend using a site like http://www.depositaccounts.com/savings/ to help you. Ultimately many of the rates are going to depend on the type of account you choose.
Message Edited by sjjensrud on 03-29-2009 06:24 AM

I don't know if there is one bank that really sticks out in my mind. The rates have been all over the place lately, so one day it's one bank and the next it's another. If you're looking for a bank that consistenly offers a good rate, why not go for a CD? Your rate is typically locked in for the term so there's no worry about signing up for a good rate and then losing it down the road. A site that might help answer your question is http://www.depositaccounts.com/savings/. If you do a little watching of the rates, you might find a bank that consistently offers a good rate.

Bank rates change like the weather. One day, Bank X is top. Next day, Bank Y has the best rate. If one is going to jump from bank to bank to bank chasing the best rate, after a while, you'll have a zillion accounts open leading to complex financial life.

Instead of rate hunting, I've chosen to settle on one online savings account that'll give me a good rate, is easy to use and has good customer service. My search is still going on but I'm leaning towards INGDirect and their Orange Savings account, combined with their Orange CDs. It may not be the best at the moment, but it's not bad and it's easy to maintain. I also plan on setting up a CD ladder, as explained in this article and video on Bargaineering.com.
