credit union pull a hard or soft...

I would like to open a savings account with a credit unit, I called to see if they pull a hard or soft inquiry and the lady wasn't sure. Do anyone know if credit unions pull a soft or hard inquiry?

It varies by CU. Some pull a hard for the initial joining; some only pull if you are getting a credit product, which can include overdraft protection on a checking account.

I recommend you ask speaking to a manager who would know the answer to your question. Unless you are going for a loan or want to open a slew of new cards soon I would say don't sweat it (even though a hard pull is annoying) because it will only effect your score for a year, and even then probably in a minor way.

I am with HTSU and DIG on this one...

I work for a credit union and all our credit inquiry's are soft inquries for membership, however a lot of CU's are hard pulls. It really depends from credit union to credit union. I am a member of two other cu's apart from where I work and one of them did a soft pull and the other was a hard pull. My current employer, which is a CU, did a soft pull for my membership. You should consult a branch manager or member services manager over the phone to get a more concrete answer. Hope that helps.

Just checked mine....Navy did a soft pull for checking...
