Today I recieved a letter from the Department of Education stating that my personal information (name, social security number and birthdate) had been compromised/lost.The letter stated that they had no reason to believe at this time that my information was being misused, just compromised. It recomended that I Place a fraud alet on my credit report. what are the cons to doing this? If I place a fraud alert is it going to give me trouble when applying for a mortgage or credit? Really not sure what to do..........

When a fraud alert is placed on your CRs (each CRA) no one can access your CRs without your OK.

DH has had one for the last 2 1/2 years and he has to notify the CRAs if he applies for any credit.

What additional information is needed in order to open an account (mortgage, checking, credit cards, etc.) with a fraud alert on the CRAs?
