Credit Inquiry from Unknown Source

I just got a notification of a credit inquiry by a " SBC MW CONSUMER I/C, 444 Michigan Ave Fl 2, Mw Consumer I/C, Detroit, MI, 482262517 " which lowered my score by a few points. I did not apply for any new credit, and have NO IDEA who this is that just dinged me with an inquiry. How do I find out, and what can I do to prevent this from occurring again?

If you do a search on the forums, you will come across some of these. See what the other OPs did.

Also, google them and see what you find.

Send them a non-PP letter (search on the forums) and tell them to remove it.

Does the date of the inquiry coincide with anything? Did you set up telephone or DSL service? What region of the country are you in? The address could be a headquarters location for an SBC office that services a number of states ...
