Scores are a very common topic here so don't overlook prior discussions as a resource.

All scores are accurate but only for their own scoring models. In other words, you cannot use a score generated by one model to determine a score generated by another model -- even if both models are FICO's. Different models use different algorithms and you should expect different algorithms to produce different results.

It's certainly possible in given situations for two different models to be coincidentally close or even generate the same number. However, keep in mind that coincidence and causality are two entirely different things.

Instead of assuming that one model is "accurate", "real", etc think of it in terms of relevance. Even a FICO can be irrelevant if a creditor does not use that specific model and/or CRA. In other words, if a creditor uses an Equifax FICO 4 then don't count on your TU FICO 8 to determine what your Equifax FICO 4 score is. If you want to know what number a creditor will pull for you then you need to know the specific scoring model and CRA used. Even then, not all scores are avaialble to consumers. Additionally, creditors can and do peform multiple pulls.

CK's VantageScores can be relevant if you know you have a creditor that uses them in their credit decisions.

I highly recommend focusing on your report data versus obsessing over numbers. It's never just about score and good reports will lead to good scores.

@HiFromSeattle wrote:

So I bought a one-time equifax report/score directly from Equifax and then compared the numbers to Credit Karma.

While the reported balances and all of that are the same, my "real" credit score from the direct pull from Equifax is 50 points lower than what CK reports...**bleep**?!

Again, make sure you're considering the scoring model. Depending on the product you purchased from Equifax the score could have been an Equifax score or a FICO.

http://www.equifax.com/all-products/

Sounds like it was the former.

@Anonymous wrote:

Credit Karma can be wrong by as many as 100 points. It is not at all reliable.

It is reliable. However, if one is using it to determine one's FICO's -- or any other scoring model than VantageScore 3.0 -- then one is using it wrong. Make sure you're using the right tool for the job. Given that CK does not provide FICO's it is not the right tool for determining one's FICO's. Even with FICO's the specific model matters so don't simply assume that FICO 8's are "reliable". Again, it's a matter of relevance. Many creditors may use FICO 8 but not all do. myFICO now provides additional models but access to them is more restricted.

@ShortBus wrote:
How do I attach a photo in a reply? I'm on my iPhone but even using the desktop site I can't see the attach button.

It's on the toolbar with the bold, italic, underline, strikethrough and other buttons. What browser are you using?

There's a sticky in Smorgasboard that covers posting images. It's specifcally about adding card photos to a signature but the basic process is the same for posting any image.

So I bought a one-time equifax report/score directly from Equifax and then compared the numbers to Credit Karma.

While the reported balances and all of that are the same, my "real" credit score from the direct pull from Equifax is 50 points lower than what CK reports...**bleep**?!

Well, guess that makes CK basically worthless.

With that being said, I am looking for a 3 credit score/report monitoring service which I can somewhat rely on to be accurate month to month. I realize that this site has some products, but $350 a year seems a little excessive, especially only to get quartley reports.

Are there any more affordable sites out there where I can watch all 3 of the big boys for a better price (and month to month)?

CreditCheckTotal seems to be the product of choice right now. Gives you 3 bureau FICO 8s for $15 a month. Experian pulls daily and TU/EQ 3 times a month.

You need to sign up for free trial then cancel before it ends to get the $15 price. If you search the forum there are plenty of threads for more info.

The scores you get here at MyFico are real Fico scores, so I'm not sure what's up with the score you pulled straight from Equifax. I know with Credit Karma, they have my TU score about 65 points lower than my real Fico, and they had my EQ 90 points lower than my real Fico, although as of yesterday CK has my EQ about 55 points lower now.. so at least their getting closer

@HiFromSeattle wrote:

Simply put the scores on Equifax are also their internal scoring model. No comparison to Equifax fico score. just as Credit karma's score is the Vantage Score. how could one possible compare. apples to watermelons to grapes??

I don't mean to attack anyone personally, but this is so indicative of our "gimme now, I'm entitled" culture. CK is 100% free, and for that price you get a wealth of information. Keeping in mind that lenders do not look at only scores, I say seeing new inquiries, collections, collections removed, balance updates, etc. is a pretty valuable tool. It's a novelty, yes, with all their suggestions, etc, but it is far from being "worthless".
