What exactly is Lexis Nexus?

Honestly I haven't a clue. I hear people referring to them all the time but have no idea who/ what they are. Even after going to their site and reading I still don't have a clear picture of what their function is and how it relates to me and my personal credit. Are they a bureau? Do creditors report to them? Do they provide a free yearly report I am entitled to?

also I see on one of my credit reports that on my recent Experian report I pulled, that under the soft inquiry section it lists Lexis Nexis on behalf of a few different car insurance companies when I recently shopped for new car insurance.

What at do I need to know about Lexis Nexis? Thanks

They maintain an extensive database containing many, many details about people. They are most commonly used by creditors for identity verification purposes. The reason you see inquiries on behalf of insurance companies is that they are probably the biggest users of the database, and the services provided by Lexis Nexus.

LexisNexis (LN) generates credit based insurance scores (CBIS) using data from your Equifax credit report and other data they collect from various sources. They also offer insurers a type of personal profile report referred to as a C.L.U.E report.

Auto and Property insurance agencies purchase scores from LN which are used, along with other criteria, to set insurance premiums. The scores they provide are:

Is my data on Lexis Nexus something I can access? Is it like a standard credit report in a sense that I can see what is being reported about me? ...dispute or correct inaccuracies? ...and get potentially damaging things removd if warranted?

Do debt collectors and collections agencies use Lexis Nexis to try and find info about us and attempt to enforce debt repayment?

Yes you are entitled to view your report from any consumer reporting agency, including LexisNexis (some give them once per year for free, while others may charge a fee). It cost me $13 bucks. They pull EX or EQ I think. However, they show my recent tax lien as released, which is not possible since I had only paid it 4 days prior to running my LN report. Anyone who has had to pay or a state tax lien knows that 4 days to report a released status is impossible. Especially in Alabama where they inform you that they will not report the release to the CB and actually tell you to disputed as they will also not respond to disputes... So, you know what that means...

It has been a while since I pulled from Lexis Nexis and others but I recall placing 2 separate requests and I think I went ahead and froze them along with the others. The inof I got was from prior threads here and on other credit sites so don't overlook existing discussions as a resource.

There are a few of these sites you don't really know about. I have my report in hand and it matches my regular reports. I have to send in the others to request a copy of their reports and hope they are correct also. Then I think it's best to freeze them which will require another letter. And any of your current creditors will still have access to these "hidden" reports regardless of the freeze. I just want to make sure they're correct. Look them up online and you will get a list of all of them. Plus what you need to do to obtain a copy of your report.

Every possible thing you can imagine, except credit history. And I mean EVERY thing. Every place you've ever lived, every property you've ever owned including tax assessments, any public records, any criminal records, sex offender registries, any professional licenses, business associations, hunting/fishing licenses, concealed weapons permits, eMail addresses and on and on. My files goes back to 1973.

Wow! Do they also keep records of people related to you or people who lived with you? I ask because of some of the verification questions I get asked - I'm trying to see where companies are getting that info from.

I purchased the LN reports with scores and those reports are primarily a re-statement of info from your EQ credit report.

The all inclusive report is free but requires submitting paperwork and documents that "prove" your identity. I was always too lazy to bother. However, based on CAPTOOL's 1/2" file I may need to reconsider. A few months back one of my sisters emailed me a news report from a neighboring state informing the public that "I" (someone with my name) had been convicted of stealing money from the company they worked for.

My name is not common (how many TTs do you know?) so maybe it's in my LN full file. If so, no job hopping for me except, perhaps, a position demanding hard labor.

Yes, it's a good idea to check all of them. I have all the contact info and what they want before they will release the reports. You just never know. And if anything is incorrect, I would like to correct it and then freeze them all. Just a precaution like you said with your name. There is someone with my exact name that lives about 20 miles away. I used to have a big problem with the CRA's & her. But did get all that straigtened out. Haven't had an issue with that in a long time. But am very curious to see what those other reports say and just how personal they get.
