Last year I got behind on a installment loan (from a payday loan company but you pay once a month). I was about 15 days behind when my doorbell rang. I looked out my window and the guy from the office was there. I did not answer the door. I was actually scared. Is this harassment or what? I eventually paid it off and will never deal with them again. Was this harassment and could I have done anything about that?

That is a real grey area. I know Beneficial was known for coming to the front door to collect on debts. What I have told people is if they feel threatened call the Police and have them escorted off your property.

Right at the time I was leaving cap1 auto finance, they were implementing field calls. I was told a non-mortgage creditor can come to your house once in 90 days. Same privacy rules - no info can be given to anyone but the account holder or a person designated by the account holder.

Ofcourse, a big comapny like Cap1 is going to follow the rules a little coser than, say -- Acme Loan Sharks, LLC.
